ASUS Xonar Essence STX II 7.1 Soundcard Review

Love my STX but possibly looking to get another sound card for my new rig later in the year or early next.

Any idea as to how this compares against the Creative ZXR, as I thought that was a very good card?

Creative cards are terrible. Drivers are a pita. Besides the STX II is the best consumer PC grade sound card money can buy.

As satisfied as a duck who lives outside a bakery.

Seriously Tom! Some of your duck metaphors... Questionable!

Can't really say a bad thing about this soundcard, it's brilliant but a little bit more than many of us probably need. Or do we spend too much money on GPUs and CPUs?

Here's one for you all. Should gamers and enthusiasts be putting some cash down on a soundcard rather than relying on onboard sound on enthusiast motherboards? If so how much do you have to spend to make it worthwhile?

Nice review again. I always thinking about to get a sound card but firts i have to buy a new aplifier because the good old one is died. And for the Logitech X530 system theres no such a difference...:) I would like to play with those audio stereo speakers i have they are fill the whole block with sound to make my neighbourhood happy...:D

I've got an X99 Deluxe, planning on getting a pair of AKG K702's predominantly for gaming, but will listen to the odd bit of music through them via YouTube/spotify. Is it worth getting this souncard for that bearing in mind there a pair of a high end reference headphones, with a 62 ohm impedance.

Also, what PCI lane can you plug this in to? My graphics card blocks my x4 slot, can it be inserted into a x16 lane?

I have the STX 1 with K702's using an X79 Deluxe board, and it's an excellent combination, the STX 2 will only be better. And yes, you can plug it into the x16 slot if necessary :)

Really?

This is like comparing an Astra to a Formula 1 car.. the creative series post-x-fi are all shit.

The ZXR hasn't isn't a scratch on the STX fella, I wouldn't even consider it, let alone put it next to it.

ROFLMAO at that....

Had a quick look at some reviews and it showed the card in very good light hence my ask.

I moved away from Creative cards a while to find the Asus ones, I do love my STX, no doubt about it.

Would love to hear TTL's thoughts/findings if he has any on the ZXR and STX-I/II.

Just don't want to rule out something without a bit more knowledge on it but like a lot here I'm heading towards the STXII even though I probably won't make full use out of it. :(

Lucky git ^_^

I was thinking of saving up a bit and getting the Sennheiser HD800 as that is one smexy can, Would go nicely with this card especially coming from the Phoebus but would also be a long term investment.

Look how smexy and pr0n like they are !!! ^_^

I'm afraid i have to disagree with you on that one man, they're not pretty at all :P

Im not a can user - thats why Ive got monitors on my desk - I like to share ;)

This is unfortunate as I'd love to have heard more of a can-users' perspective on this card tbh, as that's REALLY what it's aimed at, lets be honest :P

Just to clarify incase I missed it in the video before I commit to buying this, The daughter board serves no functional purpose other than adding extra connections ?

That is what I understand. And the reason I backed out of upgrading from the STX I

However if it removes the latency for my guitar, im all in!

I wonder if the STX has been tweaked over time; the one i got recently is totally silent when no sound is playing and Asio response is the best i've ever had, if the STX II is better it must require high end equipment to notice the improvement.

Mine is silent, but ASIO has been a pain in the ass. What drivers are you using?
