Asus Maximus IX Extreme "high" CPU temp at system default settings question

Hey all..

Upgraded my motherboard to the rampage ix extreme and while running everything at system default, I was getting very high (to what I'm used to) CPU temps on it.

My current setup (cooling wise):
obv :) the Maximus IX extreme w monoblock
i7 6700K
2x EVGA 1080 Hydro Coppers
XSPC 170 Photon res w D5 pump, set to 4
2x XSPC 480 rads w Corsair SP120s on them

While running mb default settings I would hit package temps around 78 C...
This was after a few hours of gaming...

As I'm more used to something like low 50's when using XSPCs Raystorms this seemed a bit high to me. Then I noticed that the default settings had voltage peaks way above 1.4 volts.
(did reseat the monoblock twice to make sure it was set properly etc....)

While I've had less than a day to tweak it..
Went manual on core voltage at 1.2... low 40s

OCd to 4500 at 1.35v..
After an hour of stress test it peaked at 62 C package.
Gamed for an hour or so and didn't top it.

OCd to 4600 at 1.38v.. (1.36 crashed and didn't have time to tweak it)
After an hour of ... got up to 72 C package peak.

And this was at my rad fans running at 60%.

Anyone else seen this or do I just have a moody cpu/MB ?
as a side note this is a new CPU bought for this MB so haven't had time to get to "know it".

Cheers...

OC'd to 4.7..
1.42v
Temps still wont pass 72...
I'm kinda at a loss here chums... I do admit I'm no OC guru, rather a novice, but still...
Running the MB at factory default .. then .7 oc (as based on 4k clock and add +700) and stilll getting over 10 c temp differerence.
I can't even hit the temps OC'd I was geting running factory defaults... I mean and pardon the language but wtf ?

Reset all to defaults...
Once again hitting the high 70s...
I do get the fact that manus love being able to state that their bord can do this and that , but defaut settings being shi... bad...

So the issue is stock settings reaches crazy temps? Um.. yeah thats a thing.
You need to set it manually like you did.

As for companies claiming it can do this and that, they can, you have to tweak it. They can't tweak for every CPU for you, when they try, they go high volts, as that ensures everyone can hit a certain speed, but its always more than needed.

Thank you for your reply.
I do realize companies push the default voltages higher that needed to make their product work with as many cpus as possible. This just seems rather excessive for this particular board. Maybe they figured ppl buing it would set their voltages manually anyways.
