Anti Static Electricity

Hey, Just about to build my new rig

and I have got an anti static mat: http://www.amazon.co.uk/LINDY-43080...=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1287606369&sr=8-1-catcorr + I have another wrist strap one. I've looked it all up on Google but still can't really make sense of it all.

What do I need to do with all the different wires ? Is Just a wrist strap ok ? Do I even need to use anti-static stuff ?

Oh and at the moment I am making it on carpet which yes I know is apparently a stupid idea but I'm not handling the mobo or any important items at the moment, so would you recommend I Do Not do it on carpet and do it on a wooden floor or something ?

try and do it on a desk if you can

put the wrist strap on, and attach the cord to somthing like a radeator, or somthing else grounded...

I usually attach the strap to my PC case.

Yea just attach the strap to something that you is grounded properly, like Brooksie said your old PC case will work in most circumstances. Also make sure you are not working on a carpet and try not wearing any nylon clothing and you'll be all set. Have a Fun time building mate

If needs be, you can always stick the wire in the top of a 3 pin socket. Make sure its the hole the longer pin goes into though or you may be in for a shock. *shoots self for bad pun*

I've never used any anti-static device when building my comps, static is over-exaggerated, as long as you don't wear wooly/nylony socks and are constantly rubbing them on the floor, you'll be fine lol.

But I think I'll use a wrist strap just in case. Also people constantly say attach it to a non painted part of the case, however the corsair 700D is completely coated so does it really make that much difference compared to non painted?

The paint is an insulator. Might as well not even use a ground strap if the paint will prevent it from grounding.

Also was wondering if I could screw in an unpainted screw into the case and attach the wrist strap to that, would that be ok ?

Should be ok to use the screw the way you intend, if you are worried just keep touching the valve part of a radiator every now and then but as Mayhem said, chances are slim of any static build up unless you are wearing a sythetic tracksuit

If you are really worried about invest in an anti static strap which you can plug into a mains socket.

Funny, I wear socks 24/7 and walk around in them in my carpet filled home and nothing happens.

You don't really need all this anti-static things, just work on a floor that isn't carpet, and just touch off on your PSU to make yourself neutral.
