Andre's X58 Personal Build

Updated Pictures, Oct 6, 2012

Here are a few more pictures of the blue alchemy LED strips that I took today with my tripod.

The tones aren't entirely accurate, it looks nicer in real life, the blue is a darker, deeper, rich cobalt blue and it glows more evenly throughout the case. The frames of the Noctua NH D14 fans flow a bit more pink, you can see it a bit in the pictures but not as much as in person. Basically in these pictures it looks like a more harsh, direct light that is more in the middle ofthe case. In real life it is a softer, indirect glow that is much more subtle and it glows more evenly throughout the entire case. I am really pleased with it in real life.

I was able to hide both of the led strips so that you can never see them directly, which is what I prefer, only seeing the glow from them.

Speakers

Here is an update about audio and speakers.

I haven't bought a stand alone audio card yet, but I do have a nice stereo setup. I plan to get a Asus Xonar Essence STX or The HT Omega CLARO Halo, but leaning towards the Xonar because of the 6.3mm headphone jacks.

Here are a few pictures of my Amp, which is a Classé Audio DR-9

I have some pictures of the internals of the amp. I will add those later when I upload them to flickr.

My loudspeakers are Klipsch RF-82's

Update: Fan Controller & Lighting

Hello everyone,
I am pleased to bring another small update for my personal Desktop. This time I am adding one thing, but taking away another.

I have always have very mixed feeling about any type of lighting in cases in general, and my feelings have always tended towards not liking it and in most cases thinking it looks tacky. That being said though, I have attempted multiple times throughout the years to come up with elegant lighting in some of my cases without being tacky. So far, the end result of all these past attempts has been getting rid of the lighting all together, and running the case completely stealth with no lighting.

This time is not really an exception, because today I am running my case lighting free once more, and that is how it's going to stay for the near future.

The closet I got to something that I did like, however, was the white string of Leds from the NZXT sleeved LED kit. Mine turned out to be faulty and the LEDs would flicker. I have heard others report this same thing. But I really did like the way the white LEDs would light up the hardware, but not add any tint to it like the coloured LEDs do. I also tried blue, which was okay for a bit, but it took out all of the contrast of the hardware, and made it into one big monotone blue color, which I didn't really like.

I will probably grab a couple more kits of the white LED kits of NZXT later on and install those, but keep them off most of the time, just having it there if I ever want it.

As of right now I am back to just no lighting at all, which has always been, and I syspect will always be my favorite setup.

Here is a picture from today

The second part of this update is about fan controllers.
Recently I bought a Lamptron FC6, which I really like because of the minimal look and feel, and the aluminum finish that matches the 650D case. Once small issue I encountered was that the faceplate of the FC6 was recessed about 3-4mm compared to the bezel of the case when I scred it into the 5.25 bay using the stock mounting holes. This is not a huge issue because I am just going to mark and re drill some holes in the right place so that I can line it up and have the FC6 faceplate flush with the case bezel.

The functionality of this unit is very good, it is very well built and comes with good accessories (sleeved molex extension and sleeved fan extensions) all sleeved in high quality black sleeving. It is simple to install you just connect the fans and its ready to use. You can adjust jumps on the back of the unit to change between about 6 different colors for the display. It controls the fans very nicely, the knobs feel high quality, and one thing i really like about it is if you turn the knobs all the way to the lowest position, the fan will completely stop spinning. So at any given time you can completely control which fans are spinning at what speed, but also have a selection of fans turned right off if you want. This is obviously great if you have a good modern case with good ventilation, and you are not doing very demanding tasks, you could have all your fans right off and it would be completely fine.

Aside from the small issue of the faceplate not liking up, I really like the FC6 and I would highly recommend it to anyone who likes to have manual control of your fans, and also would like to be able to turn you fans on and off whenever you want.

Cable Management Update

I had a few different things I was wanting to do with my build, so last night I took some time to work on it.

One of the things I did was run a Usb3.0 cable around the back. I know this is not preferable, but since my motherboard does not have an internal USB3 header, it was either this or not connecting USB3 at all (which is what I have had it like up until now) I knew I wanted to figure out a way to secure the cable very nearly along the back, because the main thing that bugs me about connecting it around the back is a big loop around the back that looks sloppy. Here is what I came up with.

The next thing I wanted to do was replace the Corsair 200mm fan in the roof with a couple of Noctua NF-P12s.

I also wanted to install my Lamptron FC6 fan controller that I have had for a little while now. The faceplace of the FC6 wasn't quite flush with the front of the case when I mounted it in the optical bay mounting holes, so I had to file the holes and extend them towards the front to get a good fit.

Here is what it looked like before, when it was screwed into the stock mounting holes:

Currently I have all the case fans connected to the FC6, and the NH-D14 fans are connected to the fan controller in the 650D.

I moved some of my hard drives into an external RAID enclosure, so i removed to top half of the hard drive cage for better airflow. I also removed all the excess unused cables from lighting, the other hard drives, etc.

Here is what my cables looked like at the rear panel before:

Here is a shot from midway through the cable tiding process, when I had everything loose and was sorting out a plan for the cables:

IMG_0928 by Andre Vautour, on Flickr

One of the things I didn't like about my last cable management job was that there were some cables from the front panel that I wasn't using, but I ran all the cables around the back anyway, this resulted in lots of extra cables back there. One of the things I did this one to reduce the amount of cables around the back, in addition to removing unneeded cables, was roll up all the unused front panel cables and store them at the top front of the case, just above the blu-ray drive.

Here is a shot of the finished cables:

I know some people will probably talk about the optical drive. All I have to say about that right now is that I may remove it in the future, but for right now I still use my PC for blu-ray movies, and I don't really see the point of removing something I still use in a full size desktop just for looks. I usually have the lighting in my room fairly dim, so I never really see or notice it at all, and it doesn't bother me.

Benchmarking i7-920 at 4.4GHz

Hi again everyone!

Today I played around with my i7-920 and overclocked it some more. I was curious to see how far it would go past what i previously pushed it, which was 4.2GHz.

I guess the 920 I have must be quite good, because I run it daily at 4.0GHz at 1.3V (it is rock stable at 1.27V, but the Cinebench score is higher at 1.3V. I also know that it will be stable at 4.2GHz, because I have done that in the past. But today I thought it would be fun to push it as high as it would go and see how that went with benchmarks and such.

I was able to get it to 4.4GHz on 1.4V and it was stable when the base clock was at 210 and the multiplier at 21, but it didn't like it when i tried it at 220 and multiplier at 20.

I also didn't mess about with the other voltages really at all, I just had them locked down manually around the stock positions. I imagine you might be able to get a bit more out of it if you bumped up some of the other voltages a bit, but I didn't try that today.

I am very impressed with this 920 and the scores that is it able to put out!

Nice work dude, if Cinnebench scores are your thing keep an eye out on ebay for a cheap 970 ;)

Thanks so much Tom! Like you said playing around with 1366 is a lot of fun, and you can get a lot out of them!

I know a 970 would be a lot of fun to play with. I may pick one of if I can get a really good price, otherwise I will probably move to Ivy Bridge in a bit. The 920 does everything I need it to for now, though.

And what is a good price Tom ? :D

There is actually a 990x on ebay right now for $250 +$50 shipping USD.. that seems a bit too good to be true but you never know I guess

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Intel-Core-i...198?pt=CPUs&hash=item2ec30750e6#ht_623wt_1189

I don't really want to stay on 1366 though, the prices for Ivy Bridge are good and I imagine they will only get better so I'm probably pick up a 3770K and either a sabertooth z77 or msi mpower in a few moths maybe around Christmas.

Nice, the cables at the back look even better than before. They are as neat as G-dubs, and that's saying something. Well done and I think I need to spend a lot more time on mine.

hey--how do you like the z77 mpower? currently i am trying to decide between either grabbing a i7-970 or 990x on ebay and continuing to use my sabertooth x58, or get a z77 bother and a 3770k. up until now my favorite looking board has been the sabertooth x58 and also the x79 version, but im not totally crazy about the look of tjhe thermal armor on the sabertooth z77 and i really hate fake textures on anything. So Im leaning away from the sabertooth z77 and leaning towards the z77 mpower because of the almost all black aesthetic and traditional exposed pdb.

but at the same time i really do want a 6 core processor and the cinebench scores ive seen for the 990x and 970 have them scoring higher scores then the 3770k, so that part of me is wanting to just grab one of those on ebay.

i havent totally decided yet, but i am curious how you find the mpower and 3770k?

thanks!
