AMD’s Radeon HD 6990 Poses for Pictures

Well I did some appallingly rough measurements on the photo where the card was ~5cm long and his thumb bit was approx 0.5cm long. Holding my hand in the same way, the same distance was 3cm on my hand, so therefore the card would be ~30cm long if you used me as a reference. Though obviously the guy in the photo could have really small thumbs or MASSIVE hands which make it unrealistic. But my best guess would be getting towards 30cm anyways.

1 metre?

Its about the lngth of his forearm which is on avrg about a foot? so 30cm ish

I agree prob alil ting bit smaller...29.9cm?

looks like a beast!

im pretty sure the lights in people's houses would dimm for a few seconds when a rig with one of those in is switched on

any ideas how power hungry its going to be?

I mean 1 core can be demanding enough (more so in nvidia's case) and the photos dont reveal any cooling solutions and i doubt the single end reference fan will cut it with 2 gpu cores

Two 8pins and PCIe so 75w+150w+150w=375w is its maximum power draw, add in a CPU (150w), and how max power draw should preferably be no more than 80% of what your PSU is capable of, at least a 630w power supply.

The article stated the card had a central mounted fan from the sounds of things very similar to the XFX 5970 limited edition which kept the card very cool for a two gpu card. What I'm most interested is the price with EVGA showing a dual 580 its going to be interesting how they price it against Nvidias future dual gpu cards.

It looks the same size as my 6950. Providing that guy is of similar build to me, Im going to with between 11.5 and 13 inches long. Its definitely about 10-15mm thicker though as i think i could use that to prop my car up when i do work on it.

Ive never been really sold by the multi gpu cards myself... there seems to be a lot of issues with them ín regards to playing certain games (age of conan in particular for me

)

A worrying thing to note with the centralised cooler is that the airflow will be like this

Out back of case |<<< O >>>| Into hard drive caddy

And coupled with most cases having a hefty 200-250mm fan on the front drawing cool air in, is there a possibility it will push this hot venting air back onto the card? If this is the case, then it'll be as stupid as intel's radial coolers which port warm air onto the back of the GPU and ram sticks.

Cooling fail says I.

I can just hear the screams as people try to fit that expensive hardware into the smaller case they've modded for lots of $$. ROFLMAO!

There's an elephant in my room.

Gona shame a bit, read on?

That card is expensive, ppl want to run massive resolutions with it. The GTX 480 @PCIE x8 is bottlenecked on a tripple monitor set-up meaning a dual 480 is at x16(todays standard), though not much: http://hardocp.com/article/2010/08/23/gtx_480_sli_pcie_bandwidth_perf_x16x16_vs_x8x8/2 notice AA is at low settings. NVIDIA hardware is well designed for rendering AA.

AMD's strategy beats the object. They put a mark on life stating its the best graphics solution and it might micro-stutter the eyeballs and be bottlenecking the rich erm, enthusiasts, and skinting the poor. Not helpful AMD. Do it right is the best solution.

..........and don't flash the 6950 BIOS

thx for the info and reviews OC3D churning them out often every time
