AMD Teases new FX CPU

A new AMD cpu I guess I'll hold my breath the apu's are pretty brilliant though.

Also, unless I'm wrong that money isn't going to go directly to AMD either, rather it'll be used (or rather has been) to fatten up the bureaucrats in Brussels instead.

Probably, though these days they just resort to taking money from bank accounts like they did in Cyprus. Something has to pay for the daily champagne and caviar dinners you know.

Would be nice if it was a real high end CPU not just another APU, Don't get me wrong they are good for what they are but not exactly exciting stuff.

I'm betting it's a new APU to go along with the new FM2+ motherboards we've seen. Haven't seen anything else new in terms of AMD motherboards.

Fingers crossed. But I'm betting they will cock-up at least some part of this. Even if the CPU is decent, their recent record with cooling solutions is pathetic.

seen a good point made in a article on the Xbit Labs site, what do you guys think?

Since AMD calls the new product a “processor”, the chip is clearly not an accelerated processing unit (APU) and therefore is a “classic” central processing unit (CPU) with no integrated graphics engine. A source close to AMD confirmed that the new FX chip for desktops is indeed a new multi-core CPU aimed at high-end desktops. The new FX microprocessor is fully unlocked and comes with a closed-loop liquid-cooling solution, which means that it is aimed at enthusiasts and overclockers.

Judging on the above rumour and 295X2, AMD is a rad company!
ohoho that is a truely rad pun ;)

Just because its a cpu doesn't mean it'll be AM3+. I think its some multicore kaveri now. Surely they can't have anymore stuff for piledriver left?

i am hoping it is a multicore CPU on the FM2+ socket, as it has a better memory controller, PCI-E 3.0 support and usually better audio

I have been pestering Gigabyte & MSI for info on possible future AM3+ boards for quite some time and all I have is a generic email from Gigabyte stating that they have nothing in the pipeline as AMD appear to have decided to fizzle out the now aging platform in favor of the FM2+ and the new AM1 sockets. So I'd say it is highly unlikely that the new CPU will be AM3+.

This makes me hopeful. Im wondering if they were able to somehow get some better cooling or solve the heat issue with the 9000's and are putting out 9000 clocked in the upper 4's but that doesnt put out so much heat. Its the only thing I can think of if its not an APU. Like that article says, their roadmaps clearly show there wont be a FX Steamroller so this has gotta be based off Piledriver and there isnt much else they can do with it except make it run cooler.

maybe giving the cores each their own l2 cash instead of a collectively shared one?

I wouldn't completely discount it if it's not on the "official" roadmap. The roadmaps for graphics cards last year didn't have the 290 or 290X on them for instance.

I'm convinced it won't be Piledriver/Vishera either. I would imagine there isn't any way they can get the clocks higher than the 9590.

The APU's in consoles are actually 2 seperate 4 core APU's running together. Its not all on a single die otherwise it would be a very big heat issue.
It actually IS all on the same die. Die shot here.
328mm^2 for the PS4, the xBone is something similar. Which isn't that big either, the GK110 from Nvidia (GTX 780/780 TI, Quadro K6000) is 560+ mm^2.

You know what I just actually bought a new FX-8350 a couple weeks ago to replace my 8150 so just because of that I can guarantee you that itll be a bad ass AM3+ chip. It never fails. The instant I buy something, something newer and better comes out. So yeah, Im hoping this is a FM2+ chip so I dont have to hang myself.
