Hi everyone!

Right after Christmas I'm planning on ordering my new PC and I would like to hear your opinions on my future baby :)

• Where are you located? Germany/Poland
• What is your budget? ~ 2800-2900 €
• Will you need a monitor, keyboard, and/or mouse included in that budget? I need monitor, mouse/keyboard/headset are coming from old PC
• Shall you be requiring an OS? No
• What will you be using this rig for? Gaming/ frapsing, amateur foto/video editing
• If gaming, what resolution will you be playing at? 2560x1440
• Will you be overclocking? Yes
• Do you need a full build or will you be reusing some old parts? It will be new build, from old PC I will have Crucial MX100 256 GB SSD which will serve as secondary/backup disc

Build:
- Core i7 6700k
- Asus Z170 Pro Gaming
- Gigabyte GTX1080 Windforce
- Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4, 2x8GB, 3200MHz, CL16
- SSD Samsung 850 EVO 500GB as primary OS/gaming disc
- PSU Corsair RM650i
- CPU cooling Corsair H110
- Corsair Carbide Series 100R
- LCD Asus PG279Q 2560 x 1440p

I want this PC to be future proof, and 1-2 years down the line I would change 1080 for next top end gpu to keep it running smooth. I do not intend on going SLI. I think combined 750GB ssd storage should be enough, as I can just record fraps to crucial disc, and keep everything else on samsung. I do not expect to need more than 500 GB real storage, as only recently I started feeling that those 256GB are not enough anymore. Also, maybe I should go for newer, bigger CPU cooling , question is how it would fit in 100R. Maybe slightly different case with window + nice led strips?

Also please forgive me my spelling and grammar mistakes, english is not my primary language.

Cheers, Darnn

That is term isn't very likeable in the tech community, as nothing is "future proof".

Regarding your specs, since you're building after christmas (maybe even next year?), I'd maybe wait and go with the new i7 7700K instead?...

I know that nothing lasts forever , dont worry ;) . When is i7 7700k coming out? I'm affraid that the release might be only on paper, like with 1080s

No one seems sure when 7700 is coming. But worth wait perhaps. I can send you a 1 tb hard drive for backup. As a spindle drive is still worth having just for that purpose.
But waiting for 7700 is a gamble as often it is a tiny gain in real performance. But future proofing wise is a good idea, more psychologically than practically though. But seeing how psychology aspects make a big difference and reselling in a few years would look better on paper might well be worth the wait.. Cooling wise it would more depend on noise levels and what sound proofing you are intending to do?

Hexus did a good review on the 7700K as they managed to get one ahead of the official release and it's basically a 6700K that runs a lot hotter and maybe 1-2% faster and that's all down to have a slightly higher clock.

Get yourself a 6700K on offer somewhere and skip Kabylake.

Right after Xmas you have Zen releasing in Jan, and Vega soon after. It's definitely worth a wait instead of buying immediately.

@Burger May right now I run 256 GB SSD and 500GB HDD as backup and barely utilise hdd so thats wont be neccesary, thanks for offer thought! In new build smaller ssd will be backup and new 500 gb SSD will be for system/games and for my needs thats plenty.

I did some digging about i7 7700K, indeed difference is negligible, althought tests were run on air and I want to H110 or so to cool cpu down. Maybe with that few degrees less I could squeeze more MHz for that "future proofing", or perhaps Z270's will bring some extra performance? As it is right now,the only real merit to wait for me would be some sort of confirmation that GTX1080 TI is on it's way in January, then I could snag regular strix 1080 after prices will drop.

As far as noise and temps, for me priority is performance/low temps over inaudible fans, simply because I play most of time in headset. However, as one of options I considered going for bigger AIO and low rpm fans just to bring temps and noise down. The question is do I really need anything bigger than H110 for that overclocked 6700k/7700k? Also, I wanted to go for either Corsair Case, or maybe something from nzxt, like 340S and chop in some quiet fans.

Overall, I do not need to rush with purchase, I can wait untill end of January. My main concern was the fact that from March till May I am so busy with work that I barely will have time to enjoy my new baby. Hence I wanted to buy it right after Christmas to have more time with it before job will kick in :P

You for real?

That's not the only report I've seen showing Kaby Lake being on par with Skylake. It's all about the core speed with Kaby Lake. There is nothing else to it. And the Z270 platform isn't revolutionary either; it's just one step further to what was already a very solid platform with all the essentials. If Zen doesn't impress me, I'll find a cheap 6700K and a cheap Z170 motherboard and save myself a bunch of money.

Back on topic, to the thread starter, the Corsair 100R is a little dated now and won't fit a H110i. Corsair offer superior cases by today's standards, many of which will fit a large 280mm radiator. Phanteks Enthoo EVOLV, Fractal Define R5/Define S, and NZXT N440 are all perennial favourites. If you want something more unique, Corsair's own inverted case is excellent. If you want a minimalist build, the Jonsbo UMX4 and W2 are amazing. You are limited with capable management options and cooling, but it's a fun challenge. The W2 is probably going to be my next case.

The H110i is a tad overkill unless you intend to push your CPU hard. If you're just going for a 'safe' 4.6Ghz overclock with an average chip (1.3V), I'd say stick to air cooling as it will be cheaper, safer, and quieter. But if you do want an AIO, the H110iv2 is pretty damn good. Its pump is PWM compliant, which is essential with Asetek-designed pumps as they can be unnecessarily loud.

For air cooling I'd recommend the Noctua NH-D15, Phanteks TC14PE, Cryorig R1 Ultimate, and Thermalright Le Grand Macho RT. These are all amazing coolers that will match many AIO units with fewer moving parts, quieter fans, and at a cheaper price. The H110i and coolers of that ilk really should only be considered if you want extreme overclocks (1.4V+), love the aesthetic of an AIO, or can't fit a tower heatsink due to size restraints. ITX motherboards often can't fit bulky towers and many cases only have about 150mm of CPU clearance.

With such a budget I'd suggest a PCI-e m.2 SSD for your OS. A 256GB drive would be perfect for your programs and OS, plus a few games you constantly play. You can then have a 500GB SATA SSD with your game library on it.

Case will be most likely NZXT 440. Now I have good offer on Corsair H110 right now, but the question is, is it going to be compatibile without any extra solutions with upcoming Z270 boards? I'm 99% sure it is, but I rather ask stupid question than make stupid mistake :P I will wait untill CES for release and NDA lift to see benchmarks, and if it will be valid option, then I will go for 7700k as soon as it will be available.

Z270 and Z170 are the same socket. If the H110 fits the 6700K Z170 motherboards (which it does) then it should fit a Z270/7700K setup. AMD's new AM4 platform is different and may need a new mounting plate.

Definitely wait till CES.. Ryzen would be out(well release date announced more likely) and it may be a better buy than Z270 and kaby lake(price/performance wise)

Yesterday finally I ordered i7 7700k and Gigabyte Aorus Z270 Gaming 7 , so hopefully by Saturday I will be able to build PC and post some first benchmarks. I didn't wait for Zen simply because I feel it's still so far away and I wanted by new baby to be born . Maybe bad decision but heck it

Don't sweat it. Enjoy the build^_^
