Adding partition to external backup hdd

Ok so I've got a Freeagent 250gb external hdd that has about 40gb free.. I want to install xp on this hdd in that space so ideally need to create a new partition. How do I go about this.. I've got Partition Magic but it doesn't wanna work with Vista at all so I'm a bit stuck.

That would be my plan, or plug it into an XP machine and use partition magic on that.

Yeah spose I could give the 2nd one a go.. Just an effort. Wish it would just work! Bloody thing.

Hmm it could be that the hdd is just really fragmented and it can't make a clean partition.. Not even sure if that is a possible problem.

I was thinking of mentioning that, but also didn't know if that would affect it.

Give it a clean i guess. I recommend Perfect disk, but everyone has their preference.

Well for defragmenting Vistas one is actually quite good so I'll run that today and perhaps give it a try tomorrow.. Other than that its Tuesday as I'm away most of the weekend.

Anyway I'm off to bed now.. Night
