Ad Blocker

Just opened up a news page on here about Black Ops getting Mod Support and this popped up at the top of the page in a bright pink box:

We've detected that you're using an AdBlock or NoScript utility. Please be aware that Overclock3D's ads are relevent to our content, unintrusively designed and help fund our website and staff. We'd appreciate your consideration on whitelisting us to show your support for our work. Best Regards, the Overclock3D Editorial Team.

What is all this about? There is a reason I'm using an AD Blocker is because they are always getting in the way of my experience of using this website/forum. If there were any more I would be inclined to go somewhere else, so please, don't try and guilt me into feeling bad about some ads that I missed out on.

And just a helpful note to the mods, the Ad that comes up at the top of the page when viewing a thread is hanging over a lot of the post for me, just so you know

I wasn't aware of the forum banner floating at the top like that - Must be Chrome thing. I'll get that fixed

As for the banner disabled notice, well its one of those things that could be argued back and forth forever (has already been on other websites).

At the end of the day, if something that small would really make you stop using OC3D then I see that as quite petty. You want to block OC3D's only source of income, that's entirely your prerogative. However, that message will stay there to remind you that your ad blocker isn't just removing the debt buster loans & 888 Casino ads from lesser websites, its also removing the adverts we spend a LOT of time trying to bring to OC3D because we only insist on running relevant content.

Believe me, we could make a lot more money a lot quicker by running casino ads or having those contextual ads that underline certain words in the reviews. But we want OC3D to remain as usable as possible, while also balancing it with enough advertising to cover our expenses.

You dont have to turn it off completely, just put us on the white list fella.

I'm not saying I would leave because of that message, I meant I would leave because there are so many ads (which luckily there aren't at the moment). I don't know if anyone on here can easily move or integrate ads, but I suppose the new design is still only in it's first stages and everything will get sorted accordingly

Theres no more or less ads now than we have ever had matey. Its the same layout we have had avdert wise since they originally went up years back?

This is why OC3D is whitelisted for me. The ads are relevant and you don't use those blasted contextual ads, I really REALLY hate those. I won't be buying anything from the links as they aren't for US stores, but at least they show hardware and not some stupid MMO.

Good stuff. How it basically works is...

Impressions (views) - provide us with income

Clicks - allow us to keep the income in the future

Sales - add the icing on the cake

So even if you enable the ads but never click them, it still helps us. However, if you do see ads that interest you, clicking them can really make a difference.

Oh yes, I don't mind the ads that are unobtrusive, like the ones that are nicely integrated into the webpage, it's just those ones that hover over pictures, or wont go away when loading a new page sometimes, and especially that one that covers the top of the thread. Hopefully this new design is here to stay and that the ads get sorted soon

Just a suggestion, but can you not get more down the side of a thread depending on how long it is? Like this thread has two on the side, yet you could easily fit 4 or 5 there as the thread goes on. Is this possible? I'm just trying to add my two pennies to something that annoys me sometimes, and I'm sure it can annoy others too.

On FF I've not had any problems. OC3D is about the only site I whitelist as clicks mean cash. The advertising here is well done, relevant, not too in your face and certainly nothing that makes me need to blank the screen when anyone walks in the room (not just the naughty sites have these unfortunately).

Slight side note, i dont have any adblocking stuff as i generaly just blank ads out of what im looking at as im reading the page anyway but every so often it keeps coming up saying i have a blocker and the ads are gone, thats more anoying than the ads tbh.

Same as Hunta really... I don't bother with any blockers as I'm just used to ignoring annoying ones.

I tried to use a blocker, but it changed the shape of all the sites I was used to. Didn't like it.

Yeah I'm looking into this at the moment. It seems to be if the ads are slow to load - or don't load at all, then it moans at you for blocking them.
