A new SSD for me !

So today I had some bummy news and decided to get something for the PC. I'm still very wary of the 1055T and want a retail packaged 95w, so I shall hold off for a minute. Any way, was poking around and found the Patriot PS-100 64gb for £70. Wow, too good to be true? almost.

I looked up some reviews and when the drive was released it was slated. It was fast on read and write, but the random speeds were terrible. It also hates Jmicron SATA controllers (which thankfully I don't have because my friend's 790i has one and it was a nightmare to get working).

So before I ordered it I sauntered off to Patriot's site to do some digging. A bios was released on the 29th July 2010 that fixes the random speeds, adds TRIM and basically sorts the drive completely.

So pleased as punch

Very cheap SSD with cracking performance for half of what I paid for my X32 !

Have a pokesee for it. Patriot PS-100 64gb. I mean really, £70 is cheaper than the X25V and 33% bigger. Just make sure you flash up the bios, but don't worry about faffin it 'cos on the Patriot website it gives you the info on RMA if you screw it up

Fixes are as follows...

Notes:

Firmware update #3.004

* Improved power cycling during read/write cycles

* MBR Disabled

Firmware update #3.000

* Improved random read performance

* Improved random write performance

* Upgraded channel management

So as you can see from the last two updates they have pretty much taken care of every fault with the drive. TRIM was added on bios 2.004.

Stepy. If you wanted to know what performance gain? Watch this. 55 seconds from power button to browsing the web, and five seconds of that was waiting for the network to pick up the wireless.

Honestly man, SSD FTW. I had to go skint for a month to get my Extreme but man oh man, made the biggest difference to speed than any upgrade I have ever bought.

I was poking around last night and I found a really cool toy. I don't have a mount for my new SSD that's coming on Monday and the one I am using is nasty. Couple of metal rails. So, after poking around for hours I found this thing.#

Twin drive, twin sockets single power socket. Supports RAID and all sorts and is how swappable too. Only cost me £16. The downside is that Patriot do not export goods other than memory or SSD to the UK so I have had to get a mate out there to buy it and send it over for me

The 3.004 bios was only released on the 11th of August and already people are reporting massive differences. The worst bench I saw was 199/45. If you consider that the Intel X25v is 40gb and does 170/40 and costs £25 more.. No brainer. 64gb SSD for £70 that at worst goes faster than the V and at best slaughters it.

It's coming tomorrow (apparently) and I have ordered a cable extension kit for my Temjin so hopefully I should know within a couple of days. However, I do know that a build into a case can throw up some problems so I may need to buy more cables ETC.

I wouldn't wait around for me however because I saw a review on OCUK today that has let the cat out of the bag (IE - fix this drive with the brand new bios). I think once a few people notice that they won't last long.

So it arrived. Bios flash made me quite frankly soil my kecks, as it takes AGES. Rebooted and ran ATTO and O.M.F.G.

It DECIMATES my Corsair Extreme series.

So, it will come as no surprise I have a smile on my piehole so big that it's touching my lugs.

Get one. Now. It offers over double the write performance of an Intel 25v (40gb) costs £25 less, is 20gb larger and reads faster than my Corsair Extreme.

This is Kingston’s latest generation of SSDNow V series drive giving all the performance gains and power consumption reductions of a new system, at a fraction of the price.

At up to 200 MB/s. the V series offers twice its predecessor’s read speeds, and adds outstanding write speeds of up to 160MB/s (128 GB), 110MB/s (64 GB) and 50MB/s (30 GB).

When I read the specs of my Corsair it was specced to do up to 240mbps read and up to 140mbps writes. However, in reality it did 90s writes and 206 read. And that was naked, after a fresh secure erase with 32k cluster format (optimal for the drive).

The fact is in the real world you will seldom get the quoted speeds. Also, when my X32 got the TRIM firmware update it was a lot slower. Writes of 70s and reads of about 180. Hence why I said that the Patriot decimates it, because it does.

See if you can find any real world figures on that drive.

Haha ! Thanks Lasher. That's got to be the closest I have ever seen a drive run to its stated spec. Hats off to Kingston !
 
You won't regret it dude. It's a tenner cheaper than the Kingston shipped. It also reads a bit faster too. Writes are not up to the Kingston but TBH there ain't much writing to be done on such a small drive

You'll probably see better speeds than me too with your CPU etc.
 
yeah ill see what its like its deffo gonna smoke my 2 x sata2 raptors in raid 0 but i have another spare that im gonna run in with the raid so i get 3 of them to intall steam onto as thats what humps my drive sizes
 
I will give it a thought, overclockers still have them 10+ so we shall see. Do I need a 2.5 to 3.5 bracket separately or is it included?

Talking about PC...this new forum layout it's pretty and...confusing:D. I wanted to update my details about GPU but failed miserably trying to find the way to do it
