A difficult choice.

Hi guys,

For Christmas I wanted to change my current setup to go on a platform LGA 2011. Tests conducted by Tom were once again very well done and it's a great platform but I have some doubts about some things.

The capabilities of the X79 chipset is greatly reduced. The Z68 chipset is better supplied and it makes me think that the next evolution will be little better before you buy.

Some websites say that overclocking is very average. They also say that processors much heat. This suggests that it will also better to wait a further revision of processors for better performance.

What do you think? Wait or make me happy now?

thank you for your help, and again sorry for my modest English language.

i think the real question is what you want it to do, somethings 1155 is just as good for while others is where 2011 shines.

the chipsets too have their pros and cons :|

I'd say go for an 1155 set up now unless you need the extra power for rendering etc. You can buy an 1155 build with a 2500k for half of what a 2011 one will cost you and you won't notice the difference unless you do use those extra cores.

Also, if you get a 1155 gen 3 motherboard you can upgrade to Ivy Bridge later on. SB-E, is a step backwards rather than a step forwards, the way forward (in my eyes anyway) is a smaller architecture using less power, producing less heat and increasing performance, this is coming next year with Ivy Bridge. At first it is only a small increase in performance but you still get the benefit of less power and heat and better overclocking.

The top model Ivy CPU is going to be 77w TDP which is just over half of what SB-E is at 130w TDP and with the 28nm GPUs coming out the end of this year/beginning of next as well which will also use significantly less power than current ones, you are looking at a powerful but cheap running rig.

My two cents

Thank you for your answers and advice.

My current configuration uses the socket 1366 and I found logic after 4 years of loyal service to jump on the LGA 2011.

But I am disappointed with the X79 chipset that does nothing more than a P67 or a Z68. He has even less.

Initially I wanted to buy a 3930K CPU and try to overclock. I bought a cooling Corsair H100 or I make my own watercooling.(Hoping to be able

The motherboard will be an Asus Rampage Extreme 4. She made me a very good impression when I saw the video for Tom.

It was my plan originally.

I see it like this, if you are going to do a Tesco run then there is no point in taking the Ferrari out, however if you plan on lapping Monza regularly then go for it.

Thank you again for your help.

I'll wait for the new Nvidia graphics cards and I will decide then.

I think they are announced for the beginning of the year, my setup will work easily until then.
