9900K and 16gb or 2700X and 32gb?

Hi all,

I have a dilemma...

Putting together a 4K OLED simpit build, for racing games and space sims - mainly Project Cars 2 and Elite: Dangerous. I have every component buttoned down within my £4k budget, but I'm struggling with processor choice.

Usage is going to be 75% gaming at 4k 60hz on a 55" OLED TV, and 25% 4K video editing using Hitfilm Express.

Both will be overclocked and cooled with a 280mm AIO, the 2700X to 4.1ghz and the 9900K to 5ghz.

My choices are:

Seeing as both are 8 core 16 thread I know the 9900K is going to offer an increase in gaming performance at 4K compared to the Ryzen, and also chew through video rendering significantly faster too, but am I going to be held back at all due to 16GB less memory?
 
I'd say at 4k gaming there isn't going to be much in it tbh as for rendering I'd say the 9900k has the upper hand but I guess it'd depend on how big a work file you'd be using if the 32gb would be better or not.

I don't think your be un happy with either but maybe someone that knows a little more need to chime in on it, but gaming wise they would be similar but if it was a lower res then the 9900k would go ahead a fair bit.

Ryzen 3000 is out in june/july if your able to wait until then do so.
 
Having dealt with 4K footage in work and mainly just 1080i50, go with as much ram as possible. Admittedly, I use avid media composer which, imo, is one heck of a resource hog. They suggest 16gb is the minimum ram required for working with 1080 footage and 32gb is the minimum for working with 4K. It entirely depends on the kind of editing you do, how many FPS @ 4K, how many streams you use and if you are using effects and colour correction. Simple cuts probably won’t require as much ram.

Without a doubt, the 9900k will be the faster of the two simply down to the higher core frequency. If you can get 3200 C14 memory for less than the 3600 stuff, I’d go with that instead, as Arne says, Ryzen has a hard time getting ram to run past 3000 if it’s not b-die and even if it is b-die, it takes a fair bit of luck and work to get much past 3200.
