Was getting some high temps even after underclocking my 8800gt

Here is the card with the screws removed and opened up like a sandwich.

notice that you don't need to disconnect the fan cable, once the screws are removed you can slide one half of the card down and to the left, then unfold it.

Dont forget to remove the screws on the face of the card, where the DVI connections are.

IF you DO remove the fan cable be careful, it's really hard to get off and I ended up tarring the blue control wire. I have no idea on how to re-wire these micro molex connectors, a normal molex tool will not fit into the holes. (anyone no how to fix these things?)

OVERKILL 3D on the thermal paste, this was my first attempt.

Use half of the amount shown.

Notice here I measured and cut the thermal pads before applying them to the ram. First I just arrange them to see the fit, then I apply the pads to the ram on the PCB

I choose to lightly tighten the PCB screws first, then fully tighten the GPU screws, then back the PCB screws to full tighten and recheck the GPU on last time.

I will do a check on the screws after a few cycles of heating and cooling

Here are the results...

ChiLlin at Hammerlock's around 59 c

looks like we got a reduction of approximately 2 C


Not really what I needed to remove the underclock from my card.


Things to consider;

The cost of thermal paste MX-4 and the Phobya thermal pad with shipping was about 20 dollars US.

The 120mm x 20mm x 1mm pad was only enough for the vram, you'll need more to get all the little components.

You might want to consider 1.5mm thermal pads.


Conclusion, I probably didn't need to re-paste and re-pad my 8800GT
