7820x Need Help!

So I am sure this isn't right but I need to check. I've got a 7820X bog standard OC to 4.7GHZ which is done by the Easytune on the Gigabyte board. Its got a Cooler Master Masterliquid 240 cooler on it. Idle temps are 40-45c. When I run CPUZ's stess test on it. It hits 94c and crashes. WTF? If I run BF1 it spikes on Launch to 92c then runs at like 60-65c. My old 5820k was overclocked to 4.4ghz and had a normal air cooler on it and never got that hot.

Is this about right for this processor?! If it is I am really not impressed.
 
Your motherboard is probably pumping to much volts into CPU. And if it crashes during stress test it is not stable, due to overheating. Auto tune utilities on boards are just marketing trick. Never use them. They may hit good overclock sometimes, but you will know that if you know how to manually overclock, and you wouldn't need them in that case. If you want stable overclock over 4.5 you need to delid your CPU, and get hold on those volts. Do some research on overclocking. Der8auer has good video on his channel. It is good start. I would drop frequency to 4.5 and try to lower volts. Without delid you won't get anywhere near stable over 4.5. And certainly not on 240 AiO. You need decent open loop, and you need to cool those VRMs. Der8auer also has video on those too.

Technically yes, but the power draw is quite significantly different with the lower core count chips.
 
So I assume that even these CPUs from Intel aren’t soldered? But rather toothpasted togheter?...

Different to the point that you don't need 1200W powersuply. But you still need to delid, cool vrm, put water cooling loop if you want to overclock properly.

Many people don't realize that HEDT has tons of hidden costs. Compared to 8700K, 7820X system is on the first look what... 300-ish euros more with mid range motherboards. Both can OC to 5GHz (with luck). Hell no. With 8700K just delid with a vise, put AiO and overclock. Bam 5Ghz system. With HEDT you need proper delid tool, bigger powersuply, quad channel memory, adequate cooling (monoblock, open loop)... It goes 1000+ euros more with no effort.

I am not sure this is a VRM issue so much as an overclocking tool being overzealous with the volts.

As a point of reference, I have the normal heatsinks on my RVIE on the VRMs, a custom loop on the CPU, 1.22V on the CPU and have managed 4.6GHz on 7980XE.

My suggestion here would be to plug in the overclock manually, keep the volts low, and make sure the VRMs have airflow on them. On the X299 you have a big thirsty processor, and you are asking a lot of the VRMs, especially with high switching frequencies, and a high level of loadline calibration the auto overclocks tend to apply across the board.

Get a stable 4.6 at low volts, then gradually increase to 4.7+ keeping volts as low as you can with stability.

The processors are thirstier than the 5 series, and have the TIM not solder.

Just unstable overclock. Little of everything. You have custom loop on CPU he is using 240 AiO. Big difference.

How good are your VRM temps after longer stress?
 
With regards to VRMs - low 70s after an hour of Prime and agree with unstable OC and too many volts!

OT: It has been a while - I've been very busy with work. Loved Fallout 4 - modded it completely; but still miss the lonely treks across the deserts from NV
