780 or wait for Maxwell?

With GTX780 Lightening you will get 200MHz less on overclocking memory from start, uglier card, not so fine build PCB and lower base and boost clock than Classified. For R9-290 I don't want to comment even, all my results on GTX780 Classified are comparable with R9-290X reference because card have extremely high base clock and still is much coolder and not so loud as R9-290X reference. And special if you want card for gaming AMD is inferior to NVIDIA. You will see that when you need VSync, Adaptive VSync, and older games NVIDIA new driver are much better and you don't need to search driver for specific games. I propose you 780 Classified and when arrive only to increase clock on +70/100 for GPU and +200 for memory or more if you want and power target 115%, that will be 90% enough on stock voltage and card will boost on 1200MHz with 1600 or 1700MHz memory depend do you set +200 or +400.

I did not realise the title of this thread was "How do I increase my 3dmark11 score".

I just pulled the trigger on a 780. :)

Waiting for Maxwell never even crossed my mind. Q4 2014 is the rumored date which is quite a while away, and unless it's on a new process I can't see it being leaps and bounds ahead of the 780 or 780Ti.

Good man :)

Maxwell is the teaser trailer for the 900 series much like the 600 series was the teaser trailer for the 700 series, Odd way of describing it but I hope you know what I mean ^_^

you gave up on the 290 quickly :P. It is a better idea to get a 780 then wait at the mo' though, dicehunter is right about it probably being a taster for the 900 series ^_^

Yeah. :(

Partly because I was able to sell it so easily, plus I kind of want to go back to using Debian as my primary OS and really ramp up my Linux gaming.

Oh yeah i forgot about miners buying 290s quickly. Its a shame that AMD gpus are still bum for linux. I've enjoyed my steam OS experience but I had to build another PC to actually use it properly.

Cheers guys. I think i'm gonna look into acquiring a 780. Classified or Lightning?? hmmm

Personally I'd go with a classified for the rock solid warranty support, I've seen both perform within a hair of each other on various sites but it's up to you which you think looks better as well as general performance :)

I think i'm more of a fan of the classified. Gonna possibly get one next month I think. Maybe i'll even be lucky to see another price drop ;)

The memory chips on the 780 Classified are better and overclock higher.

MSI did not use Samsung memory on the 780 Lightning which caused a lot of disappointment and poorer bench results.

I think we have a winner :D

Congrats I knew it was going to be an epic choice either way but I didn't want to come across too EVGA fanboy like Vlad ;)

I bought mine from scan for £427 in the today only deals two weeks ago. I had to return one unfortunately and they upset me so I asked for a refund and went to OCUK for the other, it cost me another £13 but I literally needed it that day. You should keep a good eye on the today only deals on scan as i'm guessing that's where it will be cheapest, today they have the Lightning for £407.

Yeah i often check out the scan deals. Won't be buying it today because I know something will come up and I will no longer have the spare cash. Next paycheck is more realistic :D

Ok so I have a 780 classified in my basket 413 quid including delivery. Do I buy yay or nay and do you think it'll be easy to sell my 560Ti Hawk which has served me beautifully the last couple of years??

If you can find an aftermarket cooler for a 290 then i advise getting that over a 780. Its a faster card and prices should be about the same.

It's hard to see price drop before Maxwell, and that I think can't be soon.
Anyway it's much better to think on chips used in Quadro as full GK110 than first from architecture and now I think I read again words as power efficiency, less power and etc... That looks like 10% performance difference from full GK110 on autumn.

I bought the Classy today guys :) £413 including delivery so i'm pretty happy.

Hopefully it'll last me 2 and a bit years or so and then maybe i'll be a high flying city boy by then and can move onto the next great card.

Thanks for all your help
