6990m Overclocking, noob time.

Ok, so this is my first attempt to overclock anything and it is on my Alienware M17x with the 6990m. I was just gonna see what(if any) thoughts OC3D community has on this matter. I mean seriously, I know pretty much zero at the moment so any tips would be appreciated XD

What are your current temps like? An overclock would generate massive amounts of extra heat and without any adequate cooling solution you will most likely damage your laptop or yourself in some way.

A friend with an Alienware M18x and two 6970m's managed to overclock his cards to 850mhz core clock, and 1050mhz on the memory clock. So I am sure if that did not melt his laptop, I will not melt my single 6990m with ether the same clock, or 900mhz on the core and 1100mhz on the memory.

That is the video of him overclocking his GPUs.

Do you know what his temperatures are like. I bet there reaching 90C+, which I would not be comfortable with. Hell, I wouldn't be comfortable with 80 C

The high end thermal pastes have hardly any difference between them from what I've heard. But, the IC Diamond thermal paste seems to be the best one out there. I would say anything under 75 C is a good temperature and I wouldn't be happy with anything over 80 C, especially in a laptop. Your friend may have been successful in OC'ing the GPU's in the laptop, but I wouldn't be surprised if the laptop died on him out of nowhere.

I am gonna ask him about his temps under load, I know he uses that IC Diamond and most people see anywhere from 8-10c difference under load from IC Diamond so he may have actually had decent temps even with that OC. But, if he does not have great temps I can run most games maxed or near maxed so I am quite happy with my current clock.
