580 Lighting SLI

Hey guys,

I'm thinking of buying an additional 580 GTX lighting. I have an ASUS P8Z68V Pro and my case is a NZXT Phantom.

Will a SLI setup be problematic or should it fit just fine?

Thanks!

You should have enough space between the PCI-E slots. The lightning is a dual slot card so you should have 2 - 3 (maybe more) cm between the cards. Iirc the lightnings dump the heat into the case, so the air flow has to be top notch. What is the fan set up like in your case?

I've left the original fans, I haven't bought any additional ones. I get pretty decent temps with the current air flow. My lighting's temps are 40°C (idle) and 60°C (load)

Nice. Very good temperatures I would say. I'd say go for it, but if the temperatures look high you might need to find a way to direct air towards the top card.

you'll be fine.....you'll have a whole slots worth between the cards....which is optimal.... the phantom has average flo....and with the cooling prowess of the tfIII you prolly even have some oc headroom.....

i think if you go sli you should add some fans to ur case, maybe even just one for extra exhaust (since your cards are going to dump quite a bit of heat in the case.

i heard that the TFIII is on par if not even better then the asus dcii, (which is pretty much what my matrix uses) and i idle at 29-31C (depending on my room temp, between 23-25C) and i think its because the HAFX has better airflow

Hey guys,

Just wanted to give you a heads-up on my 580 lightning SLI.

Well the performance is there, no doubt about that.

But I get insanely hot temps... GPU1 has even reached 98°C while I was playing Battlefield 3. In addition, the "auto" fan configuration in Afterburner doesn't work anymore. I have to manually set the fan speed.

Any idea how I could solve this problem?

I'll try and uninstall and reinstall Afterburner, see what happens.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks, guys!

Holy crap 98!! Seriously that is out of control.

In afterburner, go to settings,it's under the 'fan' page but you will see a diagram. Temps are on one axis while fan speed is on the other axis. Tick the box above the graph. Now, click in the box to set your presets. For example, i usually have my fans at 50% at 50 degrees C. Obviously with two card and the limited air available you will have to increase those values

I usually get around 68oC on battlefield 3 with my 580 lightning extreme.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

I also found this link, it'll help you out alot.

Thanks much!

Actually I'm getting very worried here. I tried to downgrade the two cards down to 790mhz and after that I had a sort of blue halo... It disappears though when SLI is not activated.

Is my second card fried?? It never went past the 45°C!

I don't know the screen turns blue. I can still see the picture but there's this cloudy blue all around it...

That doesn't sound good. Sounds like it is artifacting a bit. Take out the card that seems to be faulty and test it. Then do the same with the other one. I've got to say that any component at 98c isn't gonna be good for it.

Wait a min, first yes the temps are reallllyyyy high, you have to do SOMETHING about that, but that 'blue halo' if its what you are saying, like you still see the screen but there is a blue tint on it, its most likely a bad connection. what i mean is try wiggling the cable in the monitor a bit, and around the video card, and make sure its plugged in properly. if you still have that same problem try a different cable. (i had it happen to me a little while ago , and i was scared my monitor broke or something, but someone on here told me about it being a connection issue, and when i tried that i found that the cable just wasn't plugged all the way into the monitor, because i moved it around to watch a movie from my bed.... and the able was loosened.)

as for the sli, make sure your case has enough airflow over the two gpus (it would help if you can get something blowing straight on them because you want to move the hot air above the bottom card away from the top card) also in afterburner set higher fan speeds, even if its loud try to set it so that if the cards get above 80C you put the fans at 80% or something and IF they get to 90C put those fans at 100% speed so that you don't fry anything.

How much space is there between the two cards? The lightnings dump heat into the case so they can get extremely hot.

Like mrDMxtreme said, you need to find a way to blow air towards the cards, especially the top one.

Thank you so much for helping me out here, guys.

Looks like the second GPU is working again. No more bluish tint. I replaced the card correctly case and it worked.

As for the temps, it looks like afterburner won't manage my gpus fans. I have to set the speed manually.

It's a pain as I'd rather it were automatic but it looks like I don't have another option here.

Any idea how I could make it work again?

When I push the fans up to 85%, the first card stays a little below the 90°C. But that's only when I play BF3. This game should be more optimized, really. Even when I had only one card, the game made it much hotter than in any other game.

Regarding the airflow, I don't know what else I could do... I have a NZXT Phantom case, which is supposedly pretty good from what I've read.

Do you think I should add another fan?

You really need to blow some air towards the top card. You could placing a fan on the drive cage so that air is blown towards the top card more.

On Afterburner for the fan settings is the box that says "Enable user defined software automatic fan control" ticked?
