Hey there, My younger brother (16) came into my room today and said to me, my laptop isnt working. when i had a look it said boot mgr was missing, so i opened it up and removed the hdd and put it in my pc. It doesnt show up on my pc at all and when i put it back into the laptop it says no bootable device found ? this has happened to me in the past where another laptop hdd has done the same.

Any help is appreciated:)

Thanks, Dario.

are they spinning when they have power? cos if not could be as simple as the motor has died so they will either spin and sound funny when running then stop or not run up at all

ah you see ive only ever had had the motors fail on me with 2 drives but they were ancient never had a pcb problem but thats possible too :( unless the data was important its norm easier to scrap them other wise take them to a hdd doctor unless your comfy to take apart your hdd and put it in an old unit with a working fan

i had a couple of dead harddrives, it was always the hard drive head that failed on me. and he should probably scrap them, saving data from a dead harddrive is rather expensive.

Ok, weird, I restarted my for the 5th time to see if it would recognize the hdd, when i booted i went into the bios and it had came up under the sata 2 port. When i left the bios it asked me to do a system file check (i think thats what it was called) and it is processing it all just now. it is at 6%.

Yeah Ill see if i have any spare ones lying around and if not ill order one from Aria or somewhere. Now to see if this will work with the other drive haha

oh you have no idea :P i was once doing a work placement at a big company and they told me and the guy i was working with to scrap some harddrives properly. those were some SCSI harddrives. the workplacement was for two weeks, we did 14 harddrives at a time. we finished the first load after a week. 14 down, 5000 more to go. that poor guy is probably still scraping harddrives. the good thing is you don't really have to do anything, the PC just runs for a week and slowly rewrites the harddrives until you can't salvage the data anymore.

yeah the best cheap way to do it is wipe it and put the same large file on it on repeat, hundreds of times till it fills it delete and start again ... ive not been able to get anything off those after that

Ok, so after staying up till 6am to fix this, I got it to workl on my pc no problem. So i formatted it and then I put windows 7 on it and it worked fine. I booted from the HDD on my pc many times but when I put it in the laptop it says it cannot find a bootable device ? Anyone know what is wrong with it or can help me at all ?
