120 FPS in battlefield 4

120Hz TN vs. 60Hz IPS is matter of preference, and you should give both a spin. I much prefer IPS, but some more hardcore FPS players swear to 120Hz. Heck, I know some Quake players who refuse to abandon their CRT, namely Sony GDM-FW900. They run them at 100Hz (or was it even higher?), have framerate capped at something along the lines of 300, and say that anything flat pales in comparsion.

quake 3 cpma player here, i confirm their love for CRT displays because they are cheap and still offer high frequencies, the resolution doesn't really matter because you play the game at 800x600 anyways for better hitreg, but the 300fps stuff is bs.
quake is played at 125fps, 300fps would give them a disadvantage, i guess you mean the sweetspot 333fps but tbh in quake you need horizontal speed more than vertical. well, in cpma the jumpheight and distance isn't affected by FPS anymore, but in general that is how idtech works.

Well, the Sony in question is actually ideal for 1080p, and apparently also has awesome colour accuracy. The trade-off is its size, though.

And yeah 333fps rings a bell. I am not a quake player myself, however, as you probably guessed. d:

So somebody correct me if I'm wrong. But I try to give my 5 cents about this. 120fps would be only necessary, if you want to activate v-sync for whatever reason and don't want the fps drop to, I'm not sure if it's 60 or 90.

If you deactivate V-sync and have lets say 86 fps. In theory you would have still 26 more "actual physically displayed" frames on your monitor. There is always the possibilty of tearing and of course 120+ fps would improve overall quality and smotheness, but you would still benefit from the monitor. Similar to having lets say 55fps on a 60hz monitor (instead of 30 with vsync on).

So that is what I think would happen. Maybe somebody with a 120/144hz monitor could elaborate on that. Would be interessting.

Well as a rule of thumb you don't want vsync with FPS games due to input lag.

But with FPS drops vsync works follows:
120Hz:
120->60->40->30->24->20->15
60Hz:
60->30->20->15

Also, tearing is less noticeable at higher refresh rates.

tearing is less noticeable with 120hz and 120hz monitors have a very low response time.
basically if you go for eyecandy you are better off with IPS and/or 1440p monitors, if you are into competitive FPS then a 120hz monitor is better.

not really helpful to op question but isnt nvidia banging on about their "g-sync" that "fixs" the input lag on v-sync and gives the same benefits?

ill give my 10p worth to :D i cant play twich games with v-sync then again it was some time ago i tried it but i found the input lag very noticeable.

I know its not entirely polite to go about linking other websites.

However Hilbert over at Guru3D has just received a new 144 ASUS monitor with Gsync.

Apparently after testing it with 144hz and Gsync on, he was blown away at how good it was. Also he tested Gsync at a lowly 35fps and was still astounded by the results. He believes that this feature will be game changing for all.

There are two benefits noted in his post.

1. Low end cards can still enjoy higher detail
2. High end cards can really benefit from the high fps even more.

Basically he stated that there literally is no screentearing in anyway.

A full review will be done once he has tested it some more.
