1150 Socket - Will it Survive?

Hey everyone.

Going to be upgrading my CPU and Mobo within the next 6 weeks or so. I was dead-set on the 3570k but, recently I've been wondering about future upgrades (like 18 months or so) and where the development will shift to, if it indeed does shift. I really don't want to be stuck with a Z77 board for a future CPU.

So my question is this; Will Haswell take off? Is it worth jumping to the 1150 socket now, or wait and get the 1155 now?

Any insight would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks, Dan.

well z77 is a dead platform. no more CPU's for z77

z87 (1150) has one more tick which will be broadwell next year in 2014 and will be dead by june 2015 when skylake is released

so if you are worried about upgradability then the only option is z87 and haswell

Thank you very much for your reply. It is how I thought, however, I try to be cautious in case the Haswell chip doesn't take off.

The upgrade will be in preparation for Battlefield 4, so I have until October to make a more informed decision. 4770k I'll be looking at.

You know, I think I will go for the 4770k and the Z87 GD65.

Even if for whatever reason, the 1150 socket doesn't take off, it's still good enough to buy and will last long enough until the next generation CPU's.

Upgradability? AMD Piledriver. Socket AM3+ will probably fit at least 2 more generations of CPUs. And AMD isn't as bad as everyone says, as long as you have Windows 8. Windows 7 has a bug in it which messed up the performance of those chips :p

The way Intel are heading we may end up with a BGA only Broadwell which would make 1150 a one time use socket and next year if you want a new CPU you'll get a motherboard with the processor soldered to it.

I really really hope that doesn't occur but there are rumours floating around and Intel were playing coy when they dismissed the rumours about Haswells launch (Which comes in both LGA and BGA options currently) and wouldn't commend on broadwell not having an LGA socket.

It is a worrying trend but aslong as their high end enthusiast line (X58, X79, X99 etc) continues to exist I won't mind too much.

yea but come on, stem roller was promised this year, wont be here till next year, 8XXX series rumored this year, might have it next year.

the way that AMD are moving their products back at the moment has got me worried. Hopefully they are delaying them for a good reason and are genuinely making better products, but the other half of me is extremely worried because i don't want to shell out £300+ on and Intel CPU and RAM if they kill off FX

That's why i didn't recommend the FX Option because right now, Steamroller is looking iffy, and excavator is looking even worse.

As for Intel going BGA on Broadwell, i cant see them doing it, skylake maybe, but they wouldn't go to Broadwell on a tick, they would do it on a tock if they were going to do it.
