I'm getting a 6800 Ultra. I wanted one of these right from the outset. Of course, if its pap I will get an XT too :)

ive been thinkin about a 6800 ultra aswell, but im still waitin 4 proper reviews with a proper driver 2 go with all cards. ati have now been accused of using driver cheats to increase the performance of its newest graphics chips. so only time will tell. think i may jus pelt my 9800xt and skip this generation of grx cards and wait 4 the nxt ones.

Driver Heaven have raced off the 6800 Ultra vs the X800 Pro and the latter is their clear winner

Thats not how I see it. Its not a clear winner by any stretch of the imagination. The 6800 Ultra excels at higher resolutions and Open GL. I tend to run most of my games at 1600x1200 so I want the best framerates and best possible image quality. The XT will probably walk away with the crown for the best card overall, but I've always preferred the Nvidia image quality myself.

Thats fair enough. I dont think the nvidia drivers have stabilised yet anyway. As I've got neither card I don't really have an opinion myself, but DH did reckon the ATi card was better - lets face it, everybody starts reading a head to head then jumps to the end to see the reviewer's conclusion and then re-reads smugly agreeing or feeling they've missed the point and got it wrong! Anyway, the journo's on the mags are paid to do this - heaven !!

totally agree with u m8. 2 many ppl jump 2 the conclusion and then belive that 1 card totally ownz the otha, where as that may not b the case. and is deffinatly not the case with this latest nvidia vs ati battle. tbh its best 2 wait which card ownz hl2 and doom3. whicheva card ***s ontop with those benchamarks will get my vote

Just read somewhere that Windows XP SP2/RC2 is being released shortly with DirectX9c and Pixelshader3 that are only supported by the Nvidia card. It may be the x800 ATI cards are quicker now but wont be as soon as the XP update and new games come along?

Dont quote me on this, but I dont think PS3 will effect 2d windows performance as such and I've heard that true PS3 games are still a long way off - you're probably looking at the next gen Nvidia PS3 cards before we can actually start to reap the rewards, and by then, the R520 will have caught up with the technology. So this release seems to be a little ahead of its time - that said, I'm personally still looking forward to using a 6800 Ultra. I want to see what physical difference it makes in games like Far Cry, or one of my favourites, Combat Mission :)

i thought it was the other way around - and that nvidia is better at lower res while ati is better at higher res, especially when using AA/AF. I imagine i'll go the ATI route - the extra power requirements of the nvidia put me off :P

imo nvidia = better lifespan with features supported

ati = concurent tech with more horsepower

games useing that feature set wont start popping up for a least 18 months.. It doesnt have much to do with xp supporting it, but it does tie in nicely with the realease of maya 6.

I'm just looking at the results to date. The 6800 Ultra is better at higher resolutions than the X800 Pro, probably on par with the XT. The XT will be the better card I'm sure, but at the expense of driver stability. I love the forceware drivers - the Catalysts in comparison are pretty flakey.

I have loads of probs with the Catalyst on my System 1, forever doing a VPU recover and letting the CPU take the strain (it can't). I must have sent then 50 msgs recovering from this 'serious error'. Having said that my nvidia graphics board died completely

What sort of review is THAT? 0-0 draw by the look of it
