x79 vs z77

Just wondering which is a better option;

If I went with x79 I would buy an AsRock x79 Extreme4 or Gigabyte x79 UD3 motherboard and an i7 3820 (quad core).

I am not sure which CPU or motherboard for Ivy Bridge but I am thinking an i7 3700k and a motherboard around the $250-$350 range.

I will be using Photoshop, E-Mail, web browsing, watching movies, gaming, customizing my desktop (uses ALOT of memory)

Thanks again

Well X79 would be more powerful but will cost more and Ivy would perform slower but cost less.

Z77 boards, Ivy Bridge CPUs and the 3820 aren't out yet so no one really knows about pricing or performance but i'm guessing Ivy will be cheaper than X79 seen as X79 is enthusiast and Ivy Bridge is mainstream.

With X79 though if IB-E does turn out to be compatible with it then you have an upgrade path.

I know i wouldnt bother laying down the cash for the 3820. If i were me the choice between a quad core sbE and a quad core ivy. Ivy hands down

for what you specified, why not go with a 2600k? and save a butt load of money, and put that into all the RAM you said you're gonna need.

we don't know about ivy yet... But i think if you choose x79, you should get the hex core, 3930k

I will get the i7 3820 because it will cost around $340. I am not going for the 2600k because Ivy Bridge supposedly has a 20% performance increase.

That's the thing, if x79 has IB-E compatibly I would most likely go with the i7 3820 and later on upgrade to an IB-E CPU
