X4 vs X6

I know this is probably an old topic but I'm trying to decide between a phenom ii X4 and a phenom ii x6 for my next build.

what exactly would the advantage of having the two extra cores have on my performance?

would I only see a boost in multi tasking?

if anyone can help me it would be awesome and it may just save me some cash.

I don't know if anybody else has noticed the economy

RUFF!!!

Is this for gaming or rendering stuff like video editing?

Basically there's only one game I know that actually uses more than 4 core's and that's crises 2.

Most games only use 2 or 3 cores so if it's a gaming rig then I can't say I think it's worth going with anything more than 4 cores.

If your doing rendering work though then the more cores the better.

That's how I understand it anyways

For gaming, you won't see a major performance increase for the x4 vs x6, however for running multiple tasks / rendering / heavy duty cpu tasks then the x6 will be better.

The prices for the x6's are pretty similar or just above the x4's anyway.

The new rig I'm building will be used for gaming and also for music production which can put heavy loads on the CPU,

But right now I'm running an AMD Athlon 64 X2 processor, last gen but only rarely does a song I'm working on push the CPU too far.

I won't be doing any video rendering but I will be doing lots of Audio Production so maybe an X6 is the way to go.

Well to be honest mate, a six core would be better for any form of production, BUT, a quad core phenom II isn't a bad choice and to be on the safe side u can buy the fastest phenom II X4 u can find out there. modern games are gpu based and over 50+ fps is pretty much useless cause your eyes cannot tell the difference.

thanks for the feedback Ill keep all that in mind

Programmers are always trying to utilize more cores so unless the price difference between the models with different cores I would always go for more cores for future proofing

thanks for the help everybody I decided to go with an AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition that new egg had on special for 120 dollars for there

memorial day sale. I figure it will be a good basis for learning to overclock.

The X4 AMD's have better performance per core however the is more on the x6 depeds, if you do video rendering or CPU inteansive apps chose the x6 but if you game get the x4 Howevere if you dont have a mobo or RAM or what not get a 2500K better for the money, similar price to the x6.

Just seen your last post.

Good choice ^^ i have this running on my old rig(now a server) and it serves me well! got it up to about 3.9Ghz which i thought was pretty decent
