With Nvidia having just released the 512 version of the 7800gtx ati are still behind in the battle for the ultimate card. Their 512 X1800XT card is is running late and due for release on the 28th of November, which is currently over powered by Nvidia's 'over-priced' new offering in most benchmarks.
One of the key points is that ati are not comparing the 512 xt against the 512 gtx, its aimed at the 256 gtx as ati have plans to release a 'PE' version of the x1800xt card as they did with the x850xt series.
Another note is that earlier in the year Nvidia stated that they were not going to release a 7800ultra any time this year as they didn't think ati posed much of a threat, some people claim the 512 gtx is the ultra. Maybe Nvidia didn't rename it so that they wouldnt go back on their word, who knows. But if the 512 isnt the ultra (even though it has higher clock speeds and snazzy ultra fast samsung ram) then it will be very interesting to see who comes out on top as the overlord of the x1800s vs. 7800s war.
