Worth upgrading?

Well my b-day is in June and i was thinking about upgrading from a 3000+ and 2x512MB to an Opty 175(dual-core) and 2x1GB(probably G.Skill or other ram that is cheap but good). Would that upgrade be worth the money?

You don't really need 2GB for most games under XP, as long as you keep your background mem usage to a minimum. If you're planning to go Vista, then yes 2GB is pretty much a must and dual core is quite helpful too. CPU + RAM should run you about $400.

However, if your intention is to boost your game performance, I wouldn't bother unless you're planning to upgrade your graphics as well, to at least an X1950 Pro or better. 6600GT is pretty limiting in newer games.

X1950 Pro prices @ PCIe have dropped quite a bit since the midrange G80s came out. (as low as $130 and shipping or so, $140 + s&h on the safe side)

It gets about 4500-5000 in 3dmark06 I reckon, definitely worth it :)

IMO it depends how much you're gonna be spending on it. If you're getting the stuff reasonably cheaply then it'll be a nice upgrade. If you're looking at practically core2 prices then you're only the cost of a cheap motherboard away from a slightly larger upgrade.

Well the RAM and CPU total to $375 but i will most likely be getting a Eclipse II keyboard and a external HD. The total for all the stuff is $500.

Well, again this is just my opinion, I would go for an e4300, ds3 and value set of DDR667 (2Gb is about $100). This totals up to ~$380-390. I'd dare say that it would be quite a bit faster and you've got some room for overclockability. Also leaves the rest of your budget for your other things.

The only thing is i dont want to reinstall windows and lose all my data. I could put on the external HD but i would just like to keep my mobo and get new CPU and RAM.

No offense but this isnt 2005 anymore. Battlefield 2 alone take up 1.5gig of ram itself if it has enough. And thats an older game now. 2gig is the standard now for gaming.

Ive found with newer mobos (or maybe just my DFIs?) you dont have to reinstall Windows and even if you did you do a repair instaltion and you dont lose a thing. Your best bet is what he said, S939 and DDR1 is getting pretty outdated for the prices they still hold.

With the costings bumping up to around $500, it is awfully tempting to go out for a c2d setup.

Thing is, u`ll see a lovely boost getting more ram and perhaps a better processor - but are u then close to maxing u`r pcs potential - and for ~$500.

It is a serious question to bare in mind.

It's all up to you but you'll see a bigger boost going core2, plus like you said you can put all your data that you want to keep on the external HD for if you need to re-install windows (which you might not).

Plus with that mobo you could probably get that chip up to 3Ghz on air easy. BIG boost!

I honestly just think it's a waste of money spending that kind of cash on socket 939 now.

I really dont know what i am going to. All i really want is to get opty 175(dual-core) and 2x1GB. I dont think that for what i use my comp for that i need to get a C2D. I play some games, internet, music, and movies.

All I'm saying is that why spend 375 on an opty and RAM when for $10 more you can get a better performing chip, 2Gb of ram, AND a decent motherboard? It's up to you but I certainly know what I'd do mate.

Think of it this way, you're getting more future-proofed. You get the opty and if want to upgrade in a few months you have to get rid of everything and probably buy a c2d anyway. This way you probably won't want to upgrade in 6 months but if you do there'll be plenty of choices and all you'll need is the chip.

I know it's a little bit more hassle but it's only $10 more. Anyway that's my 2 cents (or pence, I am from Britain).

I agree with you but i dont want to go through the hassle of a new mobo and all that.

Fair enough

The opty and the RAM will do you good man :)

Thats what i thought. And maybe in 2 years when i am older and have a job i will be able to afford a pwnage C2D system. If i do the get the CPU and RAM i wont have nay issue with windows will i? i will be able to install them and it will work just like before just faster?

By then we'll all be laughing at C2D and have 100 core AMD opty's :)

Well what i meant was i will be able to have a very good system at the time, whatever will be good at the time. Will i be able to install the CPU and RAM and turn on my computer and it would be just like before just faster?
