hey guys,

i want to set up a server in my home so i can share data between computers and also store all my files on the server.

I have come across windows server 2008 r2 and home server 2011?

What are the differences and for my use which 1 would i need for my home?

Thanks

Tempted to say neither as all you asked for is the ability to share files

I guess homeserver is a lot cheaper but there are still so many options open to you if you just want file sharing over a network.

I would use freeNAS / Linux for simple fileserver

But if you want windows maybe Windows7 or Windows HomeServer

Searching the forums:

Linux, freenas or something similar.

The only reason to go server 2008 would be if you wanted a domain. If you don't want a domain and have to go the Windows route, just use Windows 7 home premium or better and do file sharing.

Re: Windows Home Server

I got very enthusiastic about using it, as like yourselves, I read some good things, saw some good videos.

.. then I read the forums of people using it.

It's good.. until something goes wrong. (Hey it's Windows, you can't vouch for that not happening)

But hey, this is reading the bad stuff. I'm sure people are using it to great effect and will praise it. (cos it hasn't busted for them yet

In the end I just installed Windows 7 on a spare pc and used it on the network.

i'd go with Win7.

in case you're gonna use linux: make sure you're using a distribution with NTLMv2 support. otherwise you may run into problems with share authentication from clients.
