If its windows 98 standard and not SE your running, you won't get very far, afaik only 98SE upwards naitively support wireless networking at all. To connect to an encrypted wireless network in 95 or 98 you would need a Cisco Aironet 350.

What speed is the laptop? its more than likely it can run XP.

Ok, 98Se doesn't support wireless encryption natively, so you need to either use the utility that came with the card, or you need to set it in the device drivers (if you can).

I ran in to the same problem once on an old ass computer I had setup as a folding rig... Once I got the bundled wireless software deglitched and working fine it let me connect up and enter in my WEP key, off I went!

Erm apart from the utility that came from the card, Windows is what you'll want to be using :p, you set the key in device properties in device manager, if it lets you. You could also find out the cards chipset manufacture, and see if they make a program for use with cards with the same chipset, as it may run better with 98se.

there is NO wirelss manager in 98 all it c's is an ethernet card you HAVE to use the utility that came with your adaptor it allows access to secured networks .. if you can find it / you current util is not compat find out which wireless chip in your puters adaptor and go to the manufacturer and downlaod the latest compatible drivers

(Marvell and ralink are the major players in the cheaper wireless adaptor sector)

Nope there isn't, as I said, but you can change network keys in device manager for the majority of cards.

(you not heard of Texus Instruments then? :p).
