windows 8 decision

Hi guys

Just a question to all those in the know with operating systems. for the last 18 months I've built 2 systems and used windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit OS but i'm just about to build my third system which will be All new and current highest end componants available. My question is, do I install windows 8 64 bit or stick with windows 7 for now. The reason I ask is I have no idea as to if there are any compatibility issues with componants or any other issues which might effect my decision on which OS to go with.

Anyway any advice would be a good help

Thanks

win 7 win 7 win 7 win 7 all the way
win 8 is for tablets, it's an OS for children and also freaking horrible to work with.
i have to work with it at school, i usually just run a virtual server with win 7 because i can't be arsed to deal with the bullshit.

When I used it it wasn't that bad. I mostly use shortcut keys on the keyboard though. If you like to click around, then it's awkward for sure. It will be interesting to see what MS does with Windows Blue. There are rumors of the start menu coming back and a built in option to boot to desktop instead of using the reg hack.

So from the sounds of it windows 7 is much more user friendly than 8. I don't think it would seem right without the task bar either lol. The question only came to mind really because I have heard people say that they might go back to 7 so really i was curious as to why but thanks to you guys input it seems like the problem is user friendlyness more than compatibility issues. So thanks guys for the info.

Windows 8, don't listen to peoples crap about it. It is better than Windows 7, especially if you have an SSD.

Once you learn how to use it, it looks and works just like Windows 7, but faster and smoother. You don't have to use the start screen if you don't want to. If you really do need a start button, there is a program called start8 which adds one to the desktop.

I have Windows 8 Pro x64 btw, people just blow the whole start screen issue well out of proportion, it's no where near as bad as people make out.

i bought 8 at xmas for 25 quid and i wish i had that money back. constant crashes, errors, incompatibilities. no aero glass. some games flat out refused to run or would hard lock within seconds. went back to 7. no issues since

I'm not trying to blow it out of proportion, I just fecking hate it. I don't like change very much, especially with something I use every day (my PC). The big full screen start page with all the "tiles" and other sh!t is really overdone, IMO. They've had a start button and a proper start menu ever since Windows 95. As the old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

That sounds more like a bad install, unstable OC or something not working properly. If that was the case with Windows 8, then there would be a lot of people, including myself who use it every day, raging about it.

Dude :D Windows 95 was 18 years ago.....

Time for a change, as much as I enjoyed the 90's i'm sure glad most things haven't stayed the way they were. Just because it's the way it has been for years, doesn't mean it should stay that way.

If everything stayed the same, things would never evolve. Embrace teh future, embrace change

What's funny is Win7 and Win8 are really updates of Vista. They aren't even different major versions.

Vista 6.0
Win7 6.1
Win8 6.2

This is what I have been telling people. If you already have Win7, there is no reason to upgrade to 8. If you are buying new anyway, buy Win8.

With the current market share of Win8 I would be totally surprised if MS didn't add the start menu again. Adoption, especially in business, education, and government is absolutely abysmal.

It ran like crap at launch for me but since my second install it's been feeling a lot more snappier compared to the first experience, Probably a tad more quicker then 7. Biggest + for windows 8 is Multi Threading is utilized a lot more efficiently. In 7 the FPS during cut scenes in Far Cry 3 drop in half, On 8 it is consistent.

win 8 has metro. that is enough reason for me to dislike that shit. not everybody is into sharing everything with his 2000 facebook friends.

^
It's weird how everyone is still in denial(start will be back in 9 blah blah nope sorry your dealing with Satan here)..

Meanwhile CISPA will probably pass senate.

clean installs on 2 different ssds. oc is stable. i just had major issues from the beginning. it did load and close fast though. much faster then 7. and 7 isnt slow really

WOW

lots of different points of view here. So far it would seem that a number of people prefer win7 for familiarity and 8 for speed. I guess the whole user friendly thing is more about being familiar with it. There also seems to be some isolated incedences of people having technical problems with 8 but I know people who have had issues with windows 7. also it's interesting to read someone say 7&8 are just updates from vista which would suggest to me that compatibility with most programs and hardware updates doesn't seem to be an issue. So I guess the next question would be is the speed of win 8 so significantly quicker to warrant the upgrade or is it miniscule?

If you are buying new, I would go Windows 8. From now on all programs, drivers and software will be optimized for Windows 8 more than they will for Windows 7 and previous versions Windows. Plus, with Windows updates, Windows 8 is only going to get better and better.

Windows 8 is faster than 7, it may not be massively faster but given the choice I know which I would prefer, and that is Windows 8.

It's up to you at the end of the day though, if you don't mind the changes that Windows 8 offers then go for it. If you would rather stick to what you know, then Windows 7 would be best.

id recommend waiting for windows 8.1 or whatever it is going to be. No metro interface and a start button and i am down for an upgrade

Thanks SieB and SeekaX, I think win 8 is the way forward for me and I shall definitely be keeping an eye out for the win 8 without metro and with task bar version (8.1?)

You can download leaked versions of Windows 8.1 Beta, you will have to Google around to find a download though.

Windows 8.1 will more than likely be a free upgrade, like a service pack for existing Windows 8 users anyway.

Can't see them releasing it as a completely new OS as it's just Windows 8 with a few optional UI changes and UI improvements. When it is released, it will just replace Windows 8 as it is now and you will only be able to buy Windows 8.1.

I have win8 on my system and it was a bit tricky in the begining to find things but after a while when you get the hand of it is it really pleasent to work with, i said when it launched that i would never use it as most here, but then started my win7 to crash and i had some problem so i formattet my ssd and booted it up with win 8 and i have not had any problems yet with crashes or anything yet and the boot time is insane if i would compare win8 to win7, so i cant really see why there is so many complaining abaut win8.
And if you are getting copies from piratebay then will the win8 have less work with acctivation (not that im saying that all should go and download their os or encourage them to do, just adding the fact)

Windows 8 is the way forward, especially for a SSD alot more optimized!
once you get used to it its not so bad!
