Windows 7 to lose email, photo & video apps

Great, no more unecessary programmes to crowd my HD, then again wht are you getting with windows now.

*In an effort to cut load times, Microsoft has cut out their whole operating system, which will be offered as a free download at some point in the future*

You read it here first

That sounds darn good.

Thing we gotta watch out for here tho, is that although the likes of the rediculous evolution of OE that is WindowsMail, won`t be included - what structure or obsticles will be in the way of the developers of the alternatives.

This does sound good on the surface tho. It`ll be like a streamlined install b4 u start. Be interesting if it takes a DVD to host it after all the stripping of clutter !

I reckon the install will still be DVD size, I reckon nearly everyone must have a dvd rom, and can you imgine the fall out from people saying "vista had all this, W7 isn't as big, we're being ripped off etc.

XP could be stripped down to fitting under 256MB (no languages apart from english), but Vista I don't know.

when microsoft sells you an OS, there should be one disk, containing the OS

one disk, containing, internet explorer, windows media player, paint, solitaire

then another disk, containing the rest of the stuff, like other games, movie maker etc...

and when you put the disk in, you have a checkbox system of picking what you do or dont want to install :)

just my 2 peneth :)

That's what I love about Nlite, cut out all the languages, cut out all of the random legacy applications (fax anyone), setup all my options and do an unattended install while you have tea.

Sounds a silly way to do things, Why not just have 1 DVD with everything on and you select what you want to install.

Hold on a minute, this sounds very similar to server 2008!!! :p I think they'll go modular like server 2008 is.

Nice to know they're cutting the crud out, doesn't really matter to me though. I'm likely never to use Windows 7 as my main OS...

Anyway by the looks of things Windows 7 is just going to be a tweaked version of Vista. AFAIK (Correct me if I'm wrong) they're not even writing a new kernel for Windows 7....

you mean like writing a new kernel from the ground up or just improving on the previous version?

The only thing I use which is built into Windows is the odd game of Solitaire/Inkball and Internet Explorer. Obviously music and video codec but who doesn't use them?

To my knowledge they're just tweaking Vista for speed.

But really, they'd do better to write a new kernel, Windows source code is really dated now and flawed.

Windows these days is just a virus magnet. Not even the Microsoft CAO could clean up the virus problem.

It's a sign of the times when just looking at a webpage in Windows can give you a virus.

in what terms is the kernel seriously flawed? You make it sound as if you've read over the kernel source code....

Okay maybe I'm being biased again... :p

I've developed quite a dislike for Windows since I adapted Linux as my main OS.

My main gribe with Windows these days is that it just doesn't really do the hardware justice.

I remember many's a time where I sat there with 1 core fully loaded and the system being incapable of doing anything else.

The system is also too tightly knit together, not much is seperate, in Windows (Microsoft prefers to call this tight integration) for example if the Browser crashes, it can take down the entire operating system.

Anyway I just can't see the logic in using the same kernel again....

EDIT: @ nathan

TBH I haven't read through the kernel source code, I'm not a competent enough programmer to have the patience to do so.

well, it's closed source so you wouldn't be able to anyway. which was my point.

I'm neither for or against either Linux, windows or even OSX for that matter. I use linux and windows all the time and hoping to get a mac soon. Xp didn't take the greatest advantage over multiple cores, but neither did most applications. I think the latter is the bigger issue and prob caused your issues. There is lots of logic in using the same kernel again, im sure it's very secure. I wouldnt say its outdated, the linux kernel has been going a lot longer, although evolving all the time.

Basic file copying is 1 thing I can shout out.

1 of the fundamental things for an OS is to copy files correctly. If Vista happens to need to ask you about an operation, it leaves the parent folder behind. Empty, but leaves it behind.

Rast ive never had that same problem with x86 or x64.

I think the fact that they are taking this stuff out is great. Ive used Movie Maker once in my life and i use Photoshop now to resize and edit my piccars. I try to get people away from Outlook and IE so if its not there i dont have to worry :)
