Windows 7 to lose email, photo & video apps

On 64bit XP I can do that and more, Folding all cores including GPU un-rar an ISO playing winamp and browsing OC3D. ;)

That is because Folding is run at the lowest priority. Try running 4/5 high priority, multi-threaded, processor intensive applications under Windows then, you'll all about it. ;)

Jaster..

Just so you know, my point was that Vista, should you have the hardware to run it is actually okay, despite all the negative press it got.

I don't want to argue with anyone here btw. ;)

zoot who the hell uses less then 3gb of ram....with ram being so cheap its ludicrous...

I do, for one; on all my other systems. I've two with 2GB DDR2 and one with 512MB DDR.

MS will make sure of that...

Yes they most certainly will, the Vista bootloader is one such example...

don't like it .... go linux instead...

That is what I did two years ago.

The only use I have for Windows anymore are games, home recording applications and propriety engineering, simulation, and programming software that doesn't work properly under Wine.

I also have converted quite a few non "tech-savy" to linux also.

i'd love to run linux...but you use which suits your needs most...and for home, media and gaming purposes I don't want to have to come home and fault find my system...I do that for idiots all day at work...my main pc runs all my entertainment system tv/video/audio/games absolute everything...if i could do that without ms with little hastle i would...but at the end of the day even my mrs can run the system (and she uses it most as she looks after our one year old while I'm bringing in the dough) without having to phone me every 5 minutes at work...now that is something XP never could claim to do :D...it is personal preference...but the vista scaremongering I think is finally coming to an end....and pitting 2 OS's from the same company seems to be a bit ..without the use of a better word...idiotic...(and i'm not calling anyone an idiot its just bill gates company wouldnt release an OS if they didnt feel it was needed...think you know better...go to the local cash machine and check yer balance....multiple it by 10 gazillion...and thats what bill gates balance probably looks like...i bet ATM's dont even have room to fit his balance on screen)...ms makes general software for average users...if i wanted to fight tooth and nail with my pc i'd install ubuntu or os X...its the hardcore fringe that make it what it can be for people like us who frequent the forums :D ...

lol dude I don't know if "fighting tooth and nail" is the right description. :D

I've got both my pretty computer illiterate parents set up with Ubuntu and they both love it. They both find it much easier to use and can actually keep all the software up to date through a few simple clicks.

If they can use it, anyone can!

Hell, I've even got my girlfriend using Ubuntu! :D

It took a bit of persuasion but in the end a virus (and having to get me to re-install the OS) was what swayed her from Vista. The only OS on her laptop now is Ubuntu, she doesn't game or run proprietary software specific to Windows anyway...

I think everyone can tell here I'm a Linux Fanboy! I wouldn't deny that for a second! :D

I would love if I could dump Windows completely and use Linux from one end of the year to the next, but unfortunately we live in a world of Windows. :(

But on the plus side a good few applications (like Microsoft Office) work fine under Wine.... :)

you show me how i can run my 46" lcd tv...dtshd surround sound (creative fatality titanium)...and HD satelite card running on ubuntu and I'll concede my point...its unfortunate....but like i said its the individuals who do good software dev for os's that make it loveable to people like us...and unfortunately ms have the goods....I had ubuntu on a dual boot when i was beta testing vista x64 and for standard tasks like surfing and email i always booted to it...but my pc's on 24 - 7 why would i shut down to load ubuntu to check email ... it would interupt my disgusting obsession with east enders :D ... (feeling the fire from the flames already)....

Well you'd be caught straight away there from the get go with the Creative card. Creative's Linux support is non-existant.

I'm in that boat atm, hence why I'm shopping for a new sound card.

Sadly you're dead right. A one company monopoly is never good, the whole situation with Windows is a testament of that. :(

ROFL! :rollingla

im intrigued as to how tox sets up his "magic systems" lol

iv done jack **** to mine and its still instant everything + vista :p

U trying to say Creative support Windows ? When that happen ?

U not tried those Creative drivers those crazy open source doods make from time to time ? *cough* they kinda work well on Leopard :p

Ur best choice for OS would be an non updated XP, just prior to SP2, older gfx drivers and use the older media player. Fully operating TV output ! (before m$ took the ability out of XP and forced nVidia etc to comply)

If ur Creative stuff works well in Vista x64, it has to be basic use. And kudos tbh along with the best of luck.

Nat, like me, is probably trying to remember the name of one of the many Linux base htpc software setups that is out there - and free I think.

Many people fear Linux, unsubstantiated imo, with the likes of ubuntu about. Think it the harking back to the mystical geek leanings.

The only thing I've tried is the beta driver they're currently offering on their website and I keep getting a compile error. Seems I'm far from being along...

I must have a poke around in more detail too...

Out of interest Rast, are you using a Creative sound card with Leopard?

A lot of people think of Linux of constantly having to drop down to a command line and type system based commands, (while you can do this and in some cases for special tasks have to) for basic everyday usage this is never necessary, and you'd be surprised to find out all the great open source alternatives for Windows apps.

Cant talk about it on here, but inherently Leopard is sitting on a linux kernal. And u can use many drivers found in the linux wilderness to run stuff on a Mac - so it would seem.

I'm using realtek alc888 atm.

I curiously looked for my X-Fi Fatal1ty on there and at the bottom selected Linux and lo-and-behold a 32/64 bit Linux beta driver is there ??!!

Tried it out, I get a compile error.

There were reports on a proper X-Fi driver for Linux at the start of the year but I haven't heard anything of it since....
