im going to buy a hp microserver.

i have 5, 2tb drives i want to add to this machine.

this box will just be used for streaming movies and music.

i want to know whats my best option here

should i install win7 or win home server as the OS, either will be installed on a small ssd.

i dont want these drives formatted when i put them in because they are full of movies and music

i know windows 7 you can connect them up and they are picked up just fine and can be shared

can windows home server do this.

which OS would yous use in this situation.

i know i will have security if a drive fails, it fails so be it, its only movies.

nothing to important.

in the future i will do some form of raid but not now

cheers

There is no real benefit in putting the OS on an SSD for your server. WHS 2011 requires a minimum HDD of 160GB and WHS v1 requires 80GB minimum.

If you want to backup all of your other PC's centrally, then WHS is good.

Which WHS version will you be using?

there reason the OS will be going an ssd is because with 5, 3.5'' drives in it, the spaces is pretty limited.

i dont want to backup any other pcs, just basically to stream movies from this box.

probably 2008. but i might use win7, either way i dont want these drives wiped, lol

Both will do the job, so would be your pick.

Are you only going to use the sever to stream though?

As it would use a lot of power to have it on to stream, if your not using it often.

@Murphyslaw, yes just to stream movies and music off, i will probably only turn it on when needed or have it some way that will wake on lan

@seamasbeathan, i will the 5, 2tb drives are full of movies and music

I'd probably go for w7 then in your situation. WHS will format your disks when you add them to the pool, and if you're not backing up pc's or settings up and managing users then w7 will work fine.

win 7 will be good for this the server os's will take up alot of resource mainly running in the background.

i would go windows 7 route
