Win 7 Software Raid Vs. Asus Mobo Raid

Hello All,

Ive been using a Western Digital Raptor + Caviar Black 640Gb SATA II for a couple years now without putting too much thought into storage options. Since getting rid of the noisy raptor and putting in a OCZ vertex 2 E 120Gb ive ordered a 2nd Caviar Black 640Gb SATA II to have a crack at a raid 0 array. The Raid 0 array will only ever be for storage (as the OS is on the SSD) and I have a WD USB 1TB drive for back up.

My question is in order to obtain maximum speed for the Raid 0 array (without the need to run an OS or worry about back-up) should I stick to the Bios setup within the Asus Sabertooth X58 or use the Software Raid setup within Win 7. I will be running the SSD and Raid 0 array and a single DVD-RW drive - no other drives.

I have been intrigued by the software raid option since reading this post at overclockers.co.uk - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18128402

As I said at the start of this post I have never previously used anything more than individual HDs for storage...Anyone with any experience like to voice their opinion?

Speed is the goal in this set-up

Thanks

Tom

if its just for a storage drive mate, speed is really irrelevant

and run the raid from the motherboard mate

Cool...Nice one for the reply, I get what your saying about the speed element just for storage, its easy to get wrapped up in read/write figures when comparing to other raid arrays and storage options.

I leave it on the mobo when the 2nd Caviar Black Arrives Mon morning.

Always good to Grab a second opinion.
