I was wondering whether its worth buying some surge protection, like those 4-way belkin ones. Does anyone else use them?

I think anyone that doesn't is just stupid tbh. Reason is they cost £10-20 for a decent Belkin surge protector that provides up to £45000 worth of compensation in the event of a surge.

Is it even worth not to do it?

It does surprise me the number of people who dont use these, especially with expensive electrical items like our PCs and TVs, DVD players etc.

I aint exactly rolling in money (damn student life) but i always stretch to one for expensive items, £20 is worth the cover of my electrical items which i could never afford to cover otherwise.

I have expensive ones for all my Hi-Fi equipment but it just occured to me I don't use one with my PC

I use Belkin ones for EVERYTHING lol. Only other thing i have used is an APC UPS system, but it got in the way so swapped to Belkin again lol.

Get em, they will save your system! If they do pop, I'm told Belkin replace them for you aswell!! BARGAIN!

How big are surge protectors?

Will I need one per componant plugged in? For example can I buy one protector and have a plug socket splitter (with four sockets on) and it will protect against surges for all four sockets? Or should I buy one for each socket?

This was my next question. Is it ok to run all my stuff off one 4-way? or can I overload the socket ?

I have one which is built into the extension lead itself. It is meant to protect all the devices plugged in.

Although I'm not using one with my PC. I have never suffered surge damage in my life, or never even known of anyone who has. Now you mention it though, I will go and sort myself out with one, just in case...

I did turn my computer off at the socket during the recent thunderstorms, as I was a little worried then

Fully surge protected - one that pays out if it does not protect and something blows - chances are that statement has more holes than a tetley teabag.

You can connect as many devices as your surge protector will allow ie 4 devices to a 4 gang way device :D

Easy peasy

think i might get one, ive never known anyone to get a surge though...... probably 1 in a billion chance... like it is to get struck by lightning :p

I've always wondered about the so called insurance, does anyone knows what the exemptions for this are like? I still use them because i believe they can help, but am slightly sceptical about whether my stuff would actually be replaced that easily.

Belkin will replace stuff. I have had a friend whos TV and Denon stereo was burnt to a crisp due to a surge in a thunderstorm.

Belkin requested the surge protector to be sent for them to check it; they checked it, sent an engineer to check the equipment at his home. 4 days later a cheque came through for all of the original cost of the TV and stereo. Total time from surge to cheque was just under 3 weeks

I use surge protectors for all my equipment. Hopefully they will do the job if a surge happens, but its better than not having any surge protection whatsoever! I have 8-way belkin gold ones, and their the best in my opinion.
