which pump?!

Hello,

I just got hold of a Thermochill PA120.2 rad, and a load of Yate Loon fans. I intend on cooling my PC, a e6420 currently OC to 3280 (stock volts etc).

I am going to get a q6600 but want to ensure I have good cooling before I try to hit 3500 on a g0 q6600.

so i hear that i brought good on this rad (2nd hand, £25); and now im thinking about a pump.

This is all going to fit into my Thermaltake Mozart TX case (again a forum-purchase, £50!).

Currently I have heard of the following:

Eheim (?1260)

Laing D5

Swiftech MCP655

Iwaki (?MD20R, ?MD30R)

Now, I find it hard to locate an iwaki dealer, was just wondering what people thought would be best for me.

I plan on using a Swiftech Apogee GTX block, and have the option of later installing a second rad/8800gtx cooler). I am not one for chucking things away and would rather i brought well in the beginning.

So, where to get this stuff from? and have i made the right decisions?

D5 would do you fine. Even a DDC-Ultra would.

Iwakis are really only used for chiller systems

Yeah, the Laing D5 (same pump as the Swiftech MCP655) and the Laing DDC with an aftermarket top are the most popular pumps. Both a great little pumps. Have a look through ST and WCUK.

With the Apogee GTX or even a D-Tek Fuzion you should have a great little CPU loop. :)

thing is, like i said, i just need someone with knowledge to tell me if it will then be enough to run :

1x pa 120.2

1x black ice pro 120.2

1x apogee gtx

1x 8800gtx block

i assume that masterflex tubing (7/16 ID)is OK, sounds good and a more snug fit that you have to heat the end to get it to fit and let it re-mould around the 1/2inch barb.

It all depends on how quiet you want your computer to be. I would say that the PA120.2 can handle a q6600 and a 8800gtx if you run the fans fast enough. Adding a second rad would either give you lower temps or allow you to run the fans at lower rpm. What model of Yate Loons do you have anyway?

I use 7/16" ID Masterkleer and the snug fit does give an extra bit of confidence against leaks. Just sit the ends in warm water for a little while and it slides over 1/2" metal barbs no bother. Need a bit more effort to get it on plastic barbs though. :)

thanks very much - i got the rad off a forum.

Just one last question - i dont need to do anything to the rad before i get started do i? it doesnt need cleaning and stuff does it?i assume i use distilled water + some additive to use as the liquid. Do I need a resevoir, or can i get by with the dangerden 1/2" fillport?

I hsve the medium-speed YateLoons, which i am currently undervolting to reduce noise, but can put up should i need the extra airflow.

thanks very very much for all your help - now i just gotta go ahead and order!

I will wash the rads before installing them in the loop and I think a T-line with the DD fill-port would be the best choice.

Since the rad is 2nd hand, I recommend cleaning it out as if it were new. The owner probably used UV dye / additives etc, you don't want to mix residues of those with yours.

Vinegar is the norm, fill to almost full, shake, leave to soak for 12hrs, shake like crazy, rinse. Repeat in if necesary. Rinse with LOTS of clean water until all vinegar has gone.

A res would be better tbh, you can get the xspc bay res, I hear the EK multi one is pretty good too... Really its up to you.

Thermochill say flushing their rads with warm water is sufficient, and I imagine anything the previous owner used is water soluble, so as Mr Smith said just give it a good shake/soak/rinse combo.

i assume i use distilled water + some additive to use as the liquid.

Yep, distilled or deionised water + either a couple of drops of biocide (anti-algae) or some corrosion inhibitor (Zerex, Pentosin, etc). The aluminium Apogee GTX top has a decent protective plating so you don't strictly need the corrosion inhibitor.

Do I need a resevoir, or can i get by with the dangerden 1/2" fillport?

As Youpla said, a T-line with the DD fill-port is perfectly good enough, although a reservoir will bleed air from the loop much quicker. It's just personal preference.
