Which fans to choose?

Hi Guys,

I want to replace my stock fans on my CM 690II. I've been looking at fans for quite a while now and I'm wondering between these 2:
-Bitfenix Spectre PRO
-Corsair AF performance

Which one would you recommend me and are there much better choices in that price range?

P.S. I don't want the fans to be too noisy.

They look quiet but i can't get them here(in Bulgaria) and I prefer something that is moving a bit more air.

Best fans i've used in my CM690II are nidec servo gentle typhoons. (distributed by scythe) Those dust filters are very restrictive on airflow so a high pressure fan is really needed. I'm running 1850rpm versions (AP-15's) which aren't all that quiet, but i run them at 1100rpm which makes them virtually silent. (quieter than the enermax TB silence i have in my power supply) At 1100rpm they shift more air than any of the other fans i own including 140mm fans. If you don't want to run a fan controller or reducer cables, you can buy 1450 and 1150rpm models too. (AP-14 and AP-13) I have not heard any bearing noise from the 6 i have fitted either. (have read a few reports that they whine, but mine are silent)

The SP120's should perform well but they aren't better than the gentle typhoon as they are louder at the same rpm. The AF120 isn't going to be as good due to the lack of pressure. (unless they are used on an unfiltered panel)

They are good for almost any use. I had some in a rig for my brother and they very quite and had a nice amount of air moved through the case.

I read that the Corsair Sp120 Quiet Fans do really well as case fans because of their static pressure and they also seem really quiet. What do you think, should I get a couple of them?

Avoid spectre pro's they're fuarking shit. Noisey, grindy, whiney and expensive, unbalanced and quite frankly a load of tosh.

I bought a box of 10 on recommendation and they've pretty much all a pile of crap

Yeah, but I was thinking of getting SP fans for my case since it has a lot of filters and a lot of people say that the Af fans dont really move a lot of air.

I've changed my corsair fans to noiseblocker eLoop, end theyr freaking awesome, insane quiet at low rpm(still moves a good amount of air) and move a lot of air at high rpm(and still not wery loud, compare to the corsair fans) i have the pwm verson(the verson with lowest start rpm)
Phobya allso oem these fans with red blades

If all you have is a dust filter blocking the fan than the AF series aren't really a bad option. In my case(R4) i have a door/grill/filter blocking the fan from airflow so a SP fan was needed to be able to get enough air through.

I use SP120s and an AF140 in my rig, and even though they're quiet editions, I personally think they're too loud without a fan speed reducer. After I've done a little bit of upgrading soon, I'll have 10 SPs in the rig, and I'm confident they'll be quiet enough all with a reducer on them, plus they look very nice :)

I like the Corsair SP120 QE fans and use them on my h100 (they replaced some Noctua NF-F12's which is saying something!)

I'm not a fan of the AF120 QE fans. I tried using them as intake fans on my case but they hardly moved any air. If you have a positive pressure case I'd advise against using them as intake fans.

@Remmy - Agreed, even the QE fans need to have their speed reduced to keep me happy.

Cheers,
Ulijin.

My last question is if I should get the Quiet or Performance sp120 fans. I have a Lamptron FC9 fan controller, which can controll them from 12.0 volts to 0. Do you think that I will be able to make the Performance edition fans as quiet as the Quiet editions?

Hi Zophos,

That really depends on how much noise you can tolerate. If like myself you're a noise freak (I have my PC in my bed room and sometime leave it on while I sleep meaning noise is something I want kept to an absolute minimum) then I'd suggest the QE fans. You'll be able to run them at a slower rpm without them stopping completely.

I know you can reduce down to 0 volts using your controller, but before you hit 0v your fans will stop working so you can't change the RPM from 0-MAX you can only change it from 0 RPM to the slowest speed they'll successfully run at and then up to their MAX RPM.

If you're unlikely to care very much about noise but want to at times have the best heat dissipation possible them perhaps the PE are for you.

If it was me I'd always stick to the QE fans as they're noisy enough at 12v I can't imagine ever wanting to run them faster.

Just my personal opinion and advice, perhaps buy 1 of each and test them for yourself as I did before putting in your full order.

Cheers,
Ulijin.
