What SSD ?

well i went a bit over budget but after all your comments and advice, and some of my own research i opted for the Samsung 850 EVO 250GB . installing it this morning.

Anyways, glad to see you went with the Sammy. TBH you will probably run out of space pretty quickly if you dont manage it properly. I have my 2TBs in Raid 0 so I can just W/E I want the freedom.

thanks guys....now ive finished a clean install of windows 10 pro and noticed that new SSD shows only 232gb available from a 250gb drive, now i understand that you never really get the full capacity shown but 18gb !!!! seems a lot to go "missing". on a much brighter note, system feels soooo much snappier . all good.

I have 250gb Crucial and so far I am satisfied, I would probably buy it again. Given current local prices and what I have seen on the internet, I would probably also give Sandisk a try.

Because the way Manufactures make the drives is read in a different format that Windows reads it. So when it converts, it's less GB than what the box says, but it's still technically the same amount.

The way manufactures rate the size, is through a base of 10. So a full GB is actually 1000MB. The way Windows reads it is through a base of 2. So a full GB is actually 1024MB, because that's the closest to 1000 you can get with a base of 2, 2^10=1024. So it's just conversion.

To get back some of that space, delete the hibernation file. Depending on how much ram you have, that's the amount you'll get back. Also, again depending on your ram size, delete and uncreate the page file and you'll get back lots of storage from that too. Only do no page file if you are comfortable with that if you have less than 16GB of ram. Otherwise i'd recommend just setting 512MB personally.

Just downloaded the Samsung SSD Magician, lots of usefull tweaks here. It also allows me to change Over-provisioning from a default value of 10% to whatever i want. im leaving it at default atm untill ive done some more research and know excatly what i might tamper with. .

Short answer really is: more over provisioning = better drive performance to an extent. diminishing returns really, you should just leave it at what it was set at via defualt.
