What is the best Anti-Virus/Internet Security Software?

I use Avast and i never know it's there at all. I've used AVG before which is good too but seems to use up more resources compared to Avast.

Common sense + MSE as a backup in case I've had a bit too much

I had avast installed, but then I got a weird virus that started playing weird stuff from my speakers :S installed norton ( I know it bad but this virus gave me no choice and is was the only software I had) and 1 scan got rid of 15 viruses :s so avast is a no no for me, I have no idea how I got this viruses, I think my brother tried downloading random applications lol

i run avast with no problems it gives you a nice warning and the sandbox is grate, every now and again i willl run a seprate anti-virus to make sure but so far nothing to complain about

MSE all the way, made by the people who made Windows, for Windows. Who better to protect an OS than the people who made it themselves

Used Comodo antivirus (100% free) for years and never been infected (I check with Hitman pro and other tools)

On friends and family friends computers who used to get infected a lot I've seen massive improvements using Comodo av. Only 1 infection on 1 pc in over a year which is a new record for them. Paid - I'm not a massive fan of paid products but i'd have to say that Prevx would be my choice if i wanted to pay for something. It can however be a bit paranoid.

Remember there is no best and everyone prefers different ones for different reasons / features.

PS. comodo has a free Internet security with a firewall (bit annoying) and also has a sandbox and a great HIPS system called "defense +"

Agree with strawbs, there is really no need to buy AV as long as your intelligent on the net / as before mentioned SAVY !

all viruses are user initated as well so you can only get a virus if you click it, It is very easy to get away with no AV at all but when you can download one for free you might as well have it there just in case

Not true I'm afraid! Drive by downloads are very real, and don't require the user to do anything. I'll have a look for some proof of concept videos of javascript escaping chromes sandbox. Their example was putting the java in the 'from' field of an email, so as soon as you receive the email and check your inbox, you've been injected with whatever the person wanted. If someone went to all that effort to give you a virus, AV or not - you're going to end up infected.

I agree with this, there are evil people out there, once I got a virus on my brother pc, which upon opening google chrome, a message poped up saying..."you got owned you son of a *****" and then my pc shuts down!!!! This is the reason I started this thread, you get put in some annoying situation when you get a virus, better b safe than sorry!!!

My recommendation would be Avast! free edition, it works great and will automatically block off websites with malicious content ( you can very easily tell it not to and it will not block your browsing. )

paid= NOD32

free= MSE

I agree with this

For home users I normally recommend MSE as it's free and works.

NOD32 is ok as a paid solution but I have to say I have noticed a lot of underlying quirks and bugs with NOD32 caused by layer0 modules

For corporate large installs, McAffee are actually pretty good also (altho from experience the home AV/FW seemed pretty bad)

Kaspersky seemed to go down in price last year after their sourcecode was leaked.

The same with Norton, their sourcecode was leaked only a few months ago, then re-leaked on tpb by anon.

There are a lot more threats than people realize aswell

I personally only use windows for games and have windows firewall + MSE with lots of rules.

what about javascript/xss/code injection etc? (hackers won't put a click here to be hacked dialogue on a hijacked domain or a code injected website)

running since 2005 sans protection except antispyware progs, and they only come up with cookies. annual bitedefender installs in case i'm wrong come up with nil. no firewall or av, though for the record my internet comes through a nat router. not sure how much i owe to it
