What is the best Anti-Virus/Internet Security Software?

My view is simple, if its connected to the internet, it needs some form of antivirus. There are so many ways to get infected without any user interaction. Remember conficker? A very good read is Worm by the author who wrote Black hawk down - its basically the story about the conficker outbreak and how it evolved. Creating the largest botnet in history to the size of something that could be used as a state weapon.

Machines are so capable nowadays and there's always an option for everyone out there. Check out av-comparatives if you want to see how vendors are currently doing. It literally changes monthly with most of them all doing similarly, So really the best is...depends.

AVG does seem to be a bit slower, but then again the tech support is helpful and have been around for long enough for a decent reputation. Avast is a bit quicker, but has missed some biggies in the past. MSE seems to be my favourite free AV. Just "feels" right in some ways - but i'd happily switch around.

Currently running Kaspersky 2012 cause i get it free with barclays. I'd recommend it and it did well in AV-Comparatives all round.

Used to use Eset back in the day when it was pretty much the ONLY choice for everything. Seemed to drop off in detection rates and got a bit frustrating to use (plus the price tag) but again, this all changes on a monthly basis.

I used to use AVG free edition a few years ago, when I switched to Kasperksy it found a number of viruses that AVG did not pick up, I use Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 at the moment.

The latest version of Norton Internet Security 2012 has been receiving great reviews, Norton's used to be one of the worse, not very good detection rates and a system hog and was difficult to remove, they have totally reworked their software, when my Kaspersky runs out later this year I'm going to try Norton Internet Security 2012.

Worth a look also, gives detection rates results etc >> http://www.av-comparatives.org/

I have set up some new rigs for friends, for a free Virus Killer I use Microsoft Security Essentials.

for me it has got to be MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) it is fast, easy to use and it just works, what else do you need

I agree. AVG sucks and Kaspersky is fantastic.

Avira is also good.

Yeah I have seen quite a few recommend Avira and it gets good reviews.

G DATA seems to get very high detection rates too, using two detection engines: BitDefender and Avast, I might give that a trial when my subs runs out for Kaspersky.

I use Comodo on a daily basis on my main rig and my laptop, works great. Every so often i will run Stinger to just make sure everything is as it should be.

I also use Norton and agree it isn't the bloatware it used to be. The last few years changed that. It nails viruses and has numerous mega reviews. People should check it out, it isn't the nightmare of old. Also, you can get online help from them if you think a virus has got through. They are professional, take over your pc in front of you so you can watch what they'll doing and sort any major issues. Things change and move on ya know!

Not had a single problem with Avast. If you want to pay get Eset, used it before and its really good and unintrusive.

I use the following and also recummend these for my clients:

Eset smart security 5.

paid for a yearly licence but light on resources and provides solid defence Firewall and Antivirus.

Malware Anti-malmware Bytes

Sweet firewall and anti spam Anti-maleware software for those annoying hard to remove Spyware and software Trojens.

both have trial version for you to test.

Dont get Norton (no offence to the software developers) but , its the Metro 2033 of the Anti-virus programs.

BIg resurce hog!

I use MSE which is great and i use a script blocker add on in firefox called noscript for that extra layer of security. Can be a bit annoying at first but once it learns which scripts you want to allow and stop you barely notice it
