Hey

Short story

Went to uncles to upgrade RAM

Took old stick out

Put new one in

Get constant series of beeps in quick succession of eachother

Took it out, put back in old one

Same thing happens

Same thing happens for both slots, the other RAM i could test with

Took cmos battery out for a good few hours without power cable

Same thing happens

Swear there was a weird smell coming from it when I first plugged in stick of RAM but cudda been from outside - smelt almost of disinfectant or TCP

So.... =/

There isn't any gunk/dust in the ram slots? if it hasn't been upgraded or cleaned, they tend to build up and then clog up the ram slots when you swap out the ram, causing a short.

You didn't knock out the 4/8 pin connector for extra motherboard power? (I did this with similar results)

This normally happens to me if I don't fit the cooler back on properly. It's a warning from my motherboard telling me if the temp went too high of the processor...

The smell could be a fried processor...

Cpu fan is fine

iv blasted the slots with some compressed air just in case

nope all cables still in =/

gonna try it barebones now aka no cd drive etc.

ok without the hard drive power molex in i get no beeps..but also no post

soon as i plug the power in i get the beep beep beep beep beep (like 2 a second and ongoing)

doubt its the temps as this happens as soon as its booting

Hard drive may be over heating?

Try using another hard drive in it's place if you have one.

Try it with the hard drive out of it's enclosure.

Ok I'll try posting again cos nothing happened last time >.<

I'm guessing this is an older pc like a k7 or perhaps a prebuilt ?

What sounds like has happened is the memory strip u put in has convinced the mobo that the fsb must be changed, although the cpu doesn't like that fsb - putting the old one back in won't help in getting it back.

Clearing the cmos is really the only thing I can think of at this stage. If the battery didn't help, try and find the actual cmos jumpers and use them.

aye its a celeron D prebuilt.

board is a gigabyte GA-8SIMLNF -the 8 might be a B prolly an 8

Ok ill take the battery out now and put the original ram back in

Any pointers on where the jumpers are?

As for temps it cant be - it doesnt even start the bios literally power button pressed, bit of whirring then beep beep etc.

You can't really miss them, not sure on your board, you know what they look like? Normally 3pins, move from one set of two to the other

like this:

+ + +

to

+ + +

ahh yeh

how many do i need

how do i use them to clear it?

They're already on the board I guess. They are on 3 pins.

So you can see them like that on the 2 pins, move them over 1 more pin, so it covers both of the other pin, leaving 1 pin left. Leave for like 5-10seconds. then place back to original position. Thats it.

No offence MrApoc, but I was expecting someone of your smartness/epicness should've known that. :p

But ofc there are other factors...

Back on topic, it would still be good to know about temps if it doesn't work.

Seriously this happened to me a lot if I didn't place the CPU cooler back on properly. Maybe you did something accidentally that could have caused it to dislodge or move somehow.

ok looks like in one of the slots one of the "pin" contact things has been "squashed" down into the slot which im guessing must be shorting?

Will i just have to somehow break it off?

never had to use jumpers really =/

Bend back up dude, straight as possible!

I take it this is in the CPU socket... Use a bread knife to bend the pin straight and what ever you do NOT break it! if the bread knife cannot get to it without bending other pins use some ingenuity a very fine tipped knife (steak knife) works pretty well if the pin is in the middle.

Whatever you do be careful they are very fragile!

You got a picture?
