Western Digital Red Drives
Western Digital have released a new range of mechanical hard drives designed specifically for use in NAS enclosures and other small storage mediums. This new range of drives feature new custom firmware which allows for easy integration and better performance in NAS devices and when the drives are in RAID arrays. They also feature new technology which allows the drives to use less power and run cooler improving the reliability of the drive. The drives also feature intelligent error recovery controls and are designed to work in higher operating temperatures which should improve there reliability.
It seems a similar drive to there RE (enterprise edition) drives as they have a 35% better MTBF rate over normal desktop drives. This is probably due to the drives being designed for 24/7 use compared to standard drives and being designed for use in warmer environments.
The drives use the SATA 6Gb/s interface and are available in capacities from 1TB to 3TB all with a 64MB cache. All drives are 3.5".

They seem a great addition to there product line and seem reasonably priced as well. I can see a good market for these.
