When it comes to HDD's how good is the following sata 3 6Gb/s 1TB Western Digital Caviar Green with 64MB Cache (WD10EARX) compared to other HDD's ?

Define 'how good'?

Its better for reliability, but it's slower than other drives. Use it for storing data, not booting an OS off it

harddrive speeds don't matter anymore, buy yourself a 60gb SSD and buy a cheap 1tb that's 7200rpm

just becareful about what brand of SSD you buy

No thats not right. If the hdd is just for data, you only need 5400/5900 rpm as they will be more reliable and still as fast as you need it. You'd only want a 7200rpm hdd if you were booting windows from it

Well i was thinking of using the hdd as a storage drive with os on it and a crucial 128GB m4 as a cach drive for intel smart response

I wouldnt really bother with smart response. Especially with a 128gb SSD. Just use the SSD as a boot drive for wiondows and programs and store all music on the hdd.

SRT is more for people with like 30/60gb SSDs that need more storage space than that for programs. If you have a 128gb you dont really need it, and it'll be slower than just using the full SSD

the other thing i was thinking of doing was using a 256GB ssd as drive c with os on it (intel chip set) and using the marvell chip set with a 128GB ssd for caching and a 1TB hdd for games and storage, what do you think

Have you already bought these drives? And do you really have over 350gb of games? I'd just forget the caching and get a bigger SSD if you really need that much, and if you cant, just use the hard drive for the games without caching. It doesnt make that much difference, especially in online games

i got hold of an intel 520 240GB but sold it on for £20 more than i paid for it so now i have no hhd/ssd's for my build at the moment i would say i need at least 350gb to 500gb of disk space and that costs

Okay, I have a different viewpoint on this. The Green drives are just that - green. They are designed to save power. They do their job great, but I would use something else as a boot. But this is about the best hard drive to use as long as you have a different boot drive.

That's not a different viewpoint - thats exactly the same viewpoint as me

Get a 240gb Crucial M4, and 1TB caviar green. Use the M4 for as many programs and games as possible and anything else put on the green. If you fancy spending a little more, get a caviar blue or black as they are faster, but they are not as reliable

You don't need that much SSD space.

Any multimedia (films/music) and documents will run fine on a standard HDD like the green or a barracuda. 7200 rpms aren't expensive these days but don't get a velociraptor 10,000 - you are better off with a slower storage and ssd.

As for SSD size - give yourself 20gb for the OS and then work out how much more you need based upon how many programs you have installed and want to run fast. For most gamers a 60gb SSD is enough - you'll have enough space for 4-7 games.

Ok so i've been working out how much ssd space i need and all so how i could store my data, if i use facebook for pic's and some vids and other cloud based storage or just get a network drive then i could just get two 128Gb ssd and have one as drive C (on intel chip set) with os on it and the other as drive D (on marvell chip set) with games and some of my media on that, So if i need to at a later date i could get another ssd and may be extend drive C, Or is their a better way?

Firstly, why would you put them on different controllers if you arent using caching? Put them on the same and raid them to make a 240gb?

Secondly, why not the 240gb in the first place? It'd probably work out cheaper, and it'll be easier to manage

It cost £17 more for a 256Gb ssd than two 128Gb ssd's and using two different controllers i was thinking might be a bit like raid 0 but you get to keep the trim

Out of the 11x 2TB drives I have in a system, I'm pretty sure 8/9 of them are the WD Green.

I've left the power saving things on them, so in terms of speed, you lose a lot there waiting for spin ups. Over the network they provide enough to give peak windows to windows of 90m, then drop to.. 60/70 ish. Windows to Lion I don't know cos there's no speed thing. On the same computer, transfer speeds are as-good as I've seen.

The non Green ones I got are the WD Black, and have a few green/black as spares.

I did get a bad batch of WD Green at one point, but that happens with everything you buy. I buy WD out of personal preference.
