Thanks. Well, today I've finally figured it all out. It's not my PSU that's causing Quadfire to fail.

I'll probably raise a few brows with this, but look.....

That is indeed a 400w PSU that's been dewired and two PCIE power connectors wired on the rails. The green cable is the sense cable that kicks it in. Here you can see it plugged into the card away from the rest of the rig.

And, fully working.

Yet, when I run the other card off of my rig's PSU it does *exactly* the same thing. And now I know why.

When fired the top card's red LED comes on. The bottom one's LED flashes briefly, before they both go out and repeat the process. It's literally been about a 40 hour investigation but it's basically the motherboard at fault. On the board there is a Molex connector above the PCIE slots which powers the lanes. However it obviously isn't providing enough juice to the lanes to get both of the 3870 X2 cards to kick. The bottom one always recycles whilst the top one seems to be waiting for it. I just tried putting the 8800 Ultra in the top slot and guess what? bottom card did *exactly* the same thing.

So it would seem that board can only run two actual physical GPU chips and adding more causes the PCIE lanes to fall and they can't provide enough volts or amps. So in a way I am happy because now I know that it wasn't my PSU at fault (750w is apparently more than good enough) *and* that there's basically nothing more I can do short of buying another motherboard which -

A. I can't afford to do and

B. I can't find one any way.

So I think I'm just going to sell the stuff off and give up.
