Very poor performance in BF3. FX-8150/MSI HD 7970 @1125/1575

Thanks for all the replies, guys. I really appreciate it.

The temperature of the GPU stays at around 65-75 degrees which is perfectly fine.

The card and all the other components are brand new so i doubt something is "damaged", even tough it would be possible.

I've noticed something really weird in afterburner though. My gpu usage stays at 55-65%, sometimes spiking up to around 75% while playing BF3, regardless of my settings. I believe it should be much higher than that, more or less staying at 90-100% (correct me if i'm wrong)

Someone mentioned that the PSU might not be feeding the card with enough power, and this seems like something that would be caused by such an issue even though it seems highly unlikely.

If the power isn't enough, your card will not be able to get a proper load, would get overheating and as result BSoDs and artifacts. And if your PSU is broken, it might cause all the stuttering and not let your rig work. Maybe one of the rails had broken down. Insufficient voltage melts cooper wires. There's always a chance to get a defective PSU, even if it is branded and expensive. Try to put another PSU and look if it's gonna do a trick. There's no harm in trying.

However, BF3 is still a raw game, even being half-year after release. And no one knows, which errors it may cause on this particular configuration. Fresh OS install might do the miracle too.

I have the exact same problem as you do. but im on a slightly diff setup

FX 8120

Sabertooth 990fx mobo

Asus 7970 DCU II GDDR5 TOP

8gigs of 1600MHz kingston ddr3

Currently running the CPU at 6 cores @ 4.2GHz and playing bf3 the CPU usage is barely 60% except on 2 cores it goes up to 80% WOW!

GPU Clocks are at 1125/1575MHz but the usage on that is max 70% usually something between 40-60%.

So basically i think its a bf3/driver issue.. not sure tho. Would love to find an answer to the problem. Only reason i invested 1.5k euros was to play the game. and its allmost unplayable..

So if someone here figures out an solution. Please let me now

cheers

Oh, btw. editing this cuz i forgot to mention that bf3 SP runs like a charm. so the problem is only on MP..

when i ran my 7970 lightning on stock i get these scores.

Metro: Average- 86 FPS Highest- 123 FPS Minimum- 30 FPS

Seine Crossing: Average- 74 FPS Highest- 112 FPS Minimum- 39 FPS

Caspian Border: Average- 69 FPS Highest- 92 FPS Minimum- 41 FPS

Wake island: Average- 71 FPS Highest- 105 FPS Minimum- 9 FPS

When i overclocked it to 1170/1600 (my 24/7clock) i get around 5 FPS more. But when i OC it all the way to the max of 1300/1600 (max afterburner can do) i saw performance drop off. BF3 struggled to go over 50FPS, i think this was just the multilayer because on the single player i was hitting 90+ FPS on ultra. Max temp of this OC was 93c

So it might just be a driver problem or something to do with the software.

This is another point worth investigating. What is your ping and network speed like?

Yea you can run modern games like bf3 on just a 4100 at stock.

Why comment then? An FX chip as I said won't, 'bottleneck,' any new card. All you have to do is look at benchmarks. The 8150 keeps up with the 2500K performance wise. The problem may be drivers.

So I presume my 955-BE bottles my 560Ti on BF3 on ultra... er no... It runs at 40 fps, with everything cranked up no problem.

yea it is mate, x4 970 was holding back my 460 and a 25k gave me a good 15 fps on my mins and around 10 more average.

if you can runn bf3 on ultra on a 560 i am guessing its lowish res which shifts the load towards the cpu more.

as for the op, sounds like its not clocking up ingame. could this be the flash issue agian where the cards stuck at a low clock because it was doing the flash in the browser?

edit

this is another case where mp is kicking a system in the teeth and sp is butter, not the fist time by a long shot.

Im on 24/1 ADSL and ping is around 10-50 depending where the server is located. So its not a ping issue.

The problem with the MP is that is not using what the CPU and GPU has to offer. So i would say that it has something to do with the game and drivers working together. But. Im no expert..

Oh and btw. When playing with low graphics the fps does go up a bit but still huge drops..

only thing i can think is to monitor gpu and cpu loads while playing, if the gpu drops load while the cpu is loaded its the cpu, if the gpu stays fully loaded during the drops its the gpu.

if niether are fully loaded and the fps still drops it has to be software.

Well that is just the point. Neither are fully loaded while playing mp

So it has to be the software. Drivers or the game engine itself

I agree, your system is capable of dealing with this.

Have you got CAPs (catalyst application profiles) installed too?

http://sites.amd.com...p-profiles.aspx

I tried 12.3 solo. then with cap. Then 12.4 betas. and now running on modified 12.4betas. Also have tried 12.2s and RC11:s. RC11.s gave the best fps but the amdkmdap is crashing constantly on those

so basically i got no chance of getting my fps to a bearable level without having constant crashes from drivers..

Tested everything. Nothing works and i bet DICE and AMD wont do shit about it cause of few gamers having issues with theyr game.. This is just bs. I wont be playing battlefield anymore.

this was happening with my friends rig,

single player fine 45-50fps on high- ultra on a first gen i5 and 560ti

soon as he starts playing multiplayer uber lag (btw its only when he was near another player),

i played around with his graphics settings and after that it worked fine.

just trie messing with your settings

dude, this rig should easily get stable 60fps with ultra high and MSAA 4x.. Its not from the power. I just played Sharqi and i had 45-50fps on the roof of the tv station. Everything on low and anti-aliasing off everything off. Im getting good solid 100 fps on singleplayer. But multi is a diff story.
