Try removing the heatsink & fan assembly from your video card (very easy), and wipe off the existing thermal paste/tape/pad.

Then apply some Arctic Silver, or hwatever thermal paste you have.

I did this and my card temps dropped a lot :).

Yeah i agree with NickS - re-applying some decent TIC should drop your temps a bit.

Also consider doing the following:

* Use driver cleaner to remove all VC drivers from your machine. Nvidia drivers have a strange habit of not uninstalling properly. Then reinstall the drivers that worked best for you.

* Grab an Arctic Cooling Silencer for the card - these are excelent and reasonably priced.

* Mod the BIOS on your card to always run the fan at 100%

* Consider installing a fan that blows cold air from the outside of your case on to the card.

If you follow Kemps guide, you can't go wrong - it really is very easy to do.

For cleaning off the goop i suggest this (2nd item down):

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Thermal_Materials_27.html

and some of those ear cleaning sticks. It really does work a treat :D

Edit: To mod the bios, what you need to do is take a backup of the bios using a util called nvflash, and then you can send it to me and i will change the fan settings for you, and then reflash your card with the modified bios.

thats somethin ive never done is backin up bios in Dos, put ill give a shot prolly this wkend, have to sleep now, but if u think of any other suggestions let me know

later and thnx

Well you sounds like your sorted mate, let us know how you go. The ear sticks XMS recommended to clean your old thermal compound work a treat :)

Its no problems - we were just wanting to know if you ok! :D

80c aint to bad for the 6800 it should be able to handle it iv seen my evga 6800 softmodded to gt and overclocked to core 400mhz ram 950mhz hit like 70c if stuff is missing from games try lowering your ram clock that should temp fix it till you can clean it up good and get a better cooler for it.

Correct me if I'm wrong (or just talking shite), but if you've got another card stacked right next to the graphics card, wouldn't that effect the heat dissipation from the fan on the card? I found that leaving a space of 1 slot between cards helps, then you can also pop the blanking plate from the middle slot, to allow improved airflow.

On my old 5950, I also fashioned an acoustic baffle out of card & foam, to cut down the noise from the fan on the card. It worked a treat.
