Upgrade time :D

Hey guys.

Been a long time visitor to the forums and love watching Tom's video reviews. I find them the most honest and unbiased reviews out there.

Now, onto the thread.

I have the upgrade itch. However, so many cards seem like a solid choice!

Firstly, I game at 1920x1080 and the current rigs stands at:

i7 920 @ 3.66ghz

2 x 5850 Crossfire (stock, will explain further down)

6gb ram

Tonnes of storage.

Corsair hx750 PSU.

I can't overclock my 5850's for the extra performance. Whenever I try my 2D clocks dive, which causes my monitors to get a horrible flicker since the 2D clocks are to low making them unstable. Sucks to be fair.

I've considered so many card choices at the moment. Such as:

Upgrading to a GTX580 Twin Frozr II with the potential of adding a second.

SLI 570. I could get this, however if I would need a PSU upgrade then I'd have to get 1 and a PSU, then later add the second.

A GTX590. My concern with these is I have seen video's of them exploding O_o. But they perform well, and are quieter then the 6990.

On the 6990... I've debated it, I do use headphones for the most part anyway. Is it really THAT loud?

6970, 6950 crossfire?

The choices at the moment are massive. I think the biggest kicker is that most of these upgrades would require a PSU upgrade. I'd just hop on the hx1000 if I had to so that I'm covered in future.

Anyway, thoughts on a noticeable upgrade from the 5850's?

Ah sweet really? I get a lot of mixed opinions on it and some say I should really get a 850. 570's do seem like the best choice at the moment. Not much slower then the 580. Also I'd be getting the twin frozr version since those coolers are beautiful, quiet and should provide some decent OC headroom

My BIOS has been flashed to the Asus BIOS from the original HIS bios. The overclock itself is fine when I'm playing a game or something. However when the card drops back into 2D mode I get a horrible flicker. It changes the 400mhz 2D clock to 172mhz.

Ordered 2 570's. Hope the HX750 will be ok. PSU Calc reckons I will be using around 800w. May still grab a PSU at some point anyway.

I would say it will be fine. I got the HX750W aswell. I am pulling around 350W from the wall, when at maximum load (F@H). That is with my CPU (2500K) overclocked to 4.7GHz and my 570 at stock. So that comes down to around 300W being pulled from the PSU itself, since they are rated 80+ silver for their DC output and not the AC input. So you have around 400-450W of spare power in your PSU. Probably even more, because the Corsair ones usually handle quite a bit of overpowering.

What are you doing with the 5850's?

(there is a fix for the downclocking problems by the way with afterburner)

Good to see another Leeds lad on here as well!

Got my cards, went to install like a kid at Christmas and they don't come with an sli bridge! WTF seriously? Had to eBay one and wait for that to arrive now. Not impressed

Hi mate, you always get a SLI bridge with the motherboard, only AMD cards come with a Crossfire bridge with the card.

Yeah pulled everything out of both boxes and no bridge. Brand new and retail mate. Only bridge I had I gave to a mate since his dog chewed his other one lol.
