upgrade advice

Hi there, im upgrading my sons pc, mainly the cpu for now, and i'd like some outside input. At the moment he's running a Celeron G1840 on a h97 mobo, with 8 gb ram aswell as an 780 grfx. My plan is to either throw in a i5 4460, or change platform to an r5 1600 with 16 gb ram on a b350. The latter option is roughly twice the price but should outlast the cheap option by quite a bit, and later the grfx will be upgraded when he earns the money for that.

at the moment he is mostly using it for playing games in 1080p, but he is getting interrested in making films on youtube, so the extra cores can help with encoding when that happens.

any opinions will be greatly apreciated, and properly taken into consideration.

yeah, here in Denmark the 4790 still costs ~280£ and the complete ryzen platform is ~420£. When i throw in the extra 8 Gb of ram the price difference is less than 75 , and i believe the ryzen will be usefull for longer.

When you drop cores on Ryzen you also drop speed. I would hazard a guess and say there wouldn't be an awful lot in it tbh.

You also didn't say you were in Finland and I'm not a mind reader :D

If you want the Ryzen to be useful for longer get the 1600.

Denmark, not sweden, and i did say it was the 1600 from the start. Imo thats by far the most interesting ryzen cpu in terms of price/performance, especially since most seem to be able to oc them to 3500+ on the included cooler.

Sorry, for some reason I had it in my head that you said the quad core Ryzen. Must have gotten confused when you mentioned I5 :)

Yeah, nothing Intel make can touch the 1600 for performance and price. I think I would definitely go that way, rather than just patching up what he has.

I have considered buying used, but since he's pc is in my office (he can't stay of it during nights) i'll proberly end up using it for folding and benchmarking, and since i have managed to kill off some hardware within warranty, i really like to have it:)
regarding sli, i actually bought 2 asus 780dc2s for a very low price last summer and sold off one of the cards for ~75% of the purchase price. I will avoid sli/xfire if possible since somewhat few games really makes good use of it...
