Hello,

Sorry for the Long post and another one of these threads.

I have an old z87 4770k, H100i at 4.4ghz, 32GB 2400 DDR3 Ram and a Gigabyte G1 980ti (upgraded from initial 780ti). Ive got a dell 1440p Monitor but looking at going 21:9 1440p.

Ill be looking to upgrade to take advantage of NVME and also because its my 5 year upgrade time where my current pc becomes a VMWare Box. I dont want to say money is not an issue but would like to save money if i can. Ill be doing VR Gaming (Elite Dangerous and Project Cars), variance of 3ds (Max and Maya), Solidworks and looking to start streaming.

I do intent to get another 1080ti Later on when its close to retirement just because i think that will extend the GPU power for another good few years.

Static Hardware:
1x 500GB Samsung Pro nvme
1x 1TB Samung Evo nvme
1080ti
1440p 21:9 @ 100hz
x62 cooling Minimum for now.
1000W SUperFLower Platinum

Case to Fit whichever below, currently using a 750d.

Been Looking at:

Asus Apex OR Rampage (I want to but im still uming and rr'ing) to go with I9 7900x and Trident 32 GB 3200 for RGB

Asus Strix or Zenith to go with x1920 or x1950

Wait for Coffee just because that will be the latest Z series can take

Or go 1700x but im pretty im tight for PCie lanes on this one so im kinda throwing this to he curb for now.

I am in theory torn between the I9 and the TR (both have enough PCIe lanes for 2x 1080ti x16 speeds) but the TR reviews ive seen and youtube tests all seem to be different and not consistent, seems to keep up with I9 on some reviews and other behind the i9. I do like the sound 1950 but the 20-50 max fps difference gaming wise does tend to give a a niggle, but rumurs are TR has a higher minimum fps on some reviews/youtubes.

What are your thoughts on AMD optimising TR as time goes on as i think this will decide whether im going TR or I9 as the price overall is ~£200 whether i go for the Strix MB/Apex or Zenith/rampage.

My current thoughts are if i go TR will i regret loosing the FPS or if i go I9 will i regret the HEDT of the TR?
I cant seem to find consistent evidence on comparisons for SolidWords or 3DS.

Which Way will you go if you were in my shoes and why? Or any other advice is welcome.

P.S On a side note how much do you think i could pass on my 980ti for?

I have to admit I read through all of that and there were not many if any questions, it read more like a statement / set of thoughts.

If you can structure it a little better we can try to help.

The only things I can say is dont by TR hoping it will magically get better. It wont, the CPU's need to get better nothing else. if youre just gaminng you could by a 1400x and most games would run the same as TR.

TR will beat the 7900X in core intensive tasks, but what are you doing that needs that?

It all sounds very complicated but it isn't tbh. If you buy into Threadripper it will last you years. Years and years. I guess it all comes down to whether you want incremental or monumental. CPUs are just not like GPUs at all and a decent one will last you for many years.

Gaming mode on TR is supposedly very good. You may not lose anything tbh.

Ive decided to go on the basis that its cooler (soldered etc), cheaper (currently), more pci-e lanes for future expansion and liking what AMD is doing to go with TR. It seems that TR is quite capable of 100fps for 21:9 100hz 1440p gaming im happy with that. Im going to see if anything happens with Black Friday but if not going to go with TR if its still cheaper than X299.

There again come buying i may change my mind again and go with max IPC.......
