Ultrawide advice

Heya everyone,

So I have a question for you all with ultrawides here, as I've had a few ones (such as Predator X34, X34P and even ASUS PG348Q) a few years ago, there have been much innovation in this segment since then.

Now we have ASUS with their TUF VG35VQ and LG 34GK950G-B (what is up with the naming these days? :huh:...).

I'm currently using an LG 27GL850 and the ultrawides have started to grow on me lately. My biggest issue back then were the fact that when watching Youtube, there were black bars on the sides. Due to Youtube being 16:9 aspect ratio and ultrawides are 21:9.

Is this still a thing? I'm specifically thinking regarding LinusTechTips, JayzTwocents, OptimumTech etc. Since their videos seems to be in cinematic aspect, so wondering if these are ultrawides now or not? Or can YT even be in ultrawide mode?...

Does anyone know if Netflix does ultrawide? As I've only used all of these on 27" and 16:9 aspect ratios.

Lastly, which ones of the mentioned monitors would you recommend me today? Seeing as the ASUS is VA and the LG is NanoIPS. Which I'm using on my 27 at the moment... But is the extra few hundred bucks worth it for the LG one over the ASUS one? Has panel technology evolved anything in this regard?.

I'm aware that on my last few threads lately, there haven't been much reponse. So I thanks anyone and everyone who replies and commenting on this in advance!

I have black bars on the sides when watching YouTube on my ultra wide but where this thing shines is in gaming and TBH I wouldn't like to go back and I can highly recommend this MSI Optix MPG341CQR very highly
 
In all honesty I'd wait a bit before you invest a large lump of money into a good Ultrawide, Wait until 3440x1440 IPS 144Hz becomes more prominent and less expensive.

I believe you can get them for 700-800 GBP now which to me is not bad given the panel quality. I don't see it dropping any time soon. And maybe increasing if anything due to the world economy.

Isn't it mainly VA though ? From my own experience it has noticeable colour shift over IPS.
 
Would you all say that paying around 300 bucks more for the LG and it's IPS panel and 100Hz (120Hz OC, not a fan of OC that much since it can cause some issues due to not being the native refresh rate) is wroth it, compared to the ASUS one with it's VA?

I'm not that familiar in how much of a difference VA is compared to IPS. I know that VA is closer to IPS, than TN is to IPS. But would you guys say these features are worth the extra cash? Especially thinking in the long term, since a monitor is a long term investment and the thing you literally sit and look at all day.

To some, that might sound like a no brainer and I agree... Yet, the wallet would feel like a punch in the sack.
 
It depends what you want. TN looks like ass, but has very low input lag. The lowest.

VA has fantastic blacks and they suffer from smearing to a degree and worse input lag than TN.

IPS better colour and viewing angles, lag can be bad but some have tech built into them to make it better (different modes and etc).

VA is the happy medium if you don't want to spend tons.

Most of it will come down to what games you like to play. They obviously support 21:9 I assume.
 
I don't think it's worth paying for any OC mode. I have a 144hz panel with a 165hz OC mode, and I find it impossible to see any difference. I also find that as long as you're at 100hz, that's fine. Anything above that is severely diminishing differences, unless you're one of those ultra-high-refresh people.
