For those of you who have not ventured into open source/linux/ubuntu - Ubuntu is a free OS which basically comes with everything an everday user will need preinstalled. There are thousands of free applications (most of which actually better than Windows pay for apps - such as dvd burning, takes longer but produces better quality than Nero.
Get it
I recommend x64 if you have a x64 system. I also recommend .torrent as the fastest method of downloading.
It can be a bit strange to setup at first, but I always ask in http://www.ubuntuforums.org if I have any issues
