I wasn't going to write this review just yet as this game hasn't been officially released and is currently only available on early access for a short time which also includes a bonus 10% off the price. Having grown up in the 80's where platform games were the norm and the birth of the first person shooter was a blocky pipe dream akin to the Windows 95 3D screen saver, anyway I'm still extremely fond of platformers and they hold a somewhat sentimental value to me, now I've been a fan of the previous 2 games in the Trine series and played them to death. I viewed a small youtube clip of Trine 3 a few months ago of a very much work in progress beta showing the opening level and my jaw just dropped, I was excited it was a continuation of the prequels and nothing seemed out of place.. but then something changed! a third dimension seemed to appear and the player was being moved into the distance, my mind then wanders and I start thinking "well that's the end of that then, if it ain't broke, why?? it's a platformer that was what made it so appealing, why change the format", should I have been worried.. Lets see.

Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power is a fairytale journey which takes you on a quest with three heroes: Amadeus the Wizard, Pontius the Knight, and Zoya the Thief. Playable in singleplayer and online or local co-op - test your skills in combat and solve puzzles in the most creative ways!

Firstly it is still Trine the same 3 main characters our heroes, Amadeus the Wizard, Pontius the Knight and Zoya the Thief, each character possesses their own special skills which you will need to make your way through each level.

Amadeus: His skills include the ability to summon objects including boxes and platforms he can also manipulate contraptions and certain level objects, but he's pretty much useless in a fight.

Pontius: The knight outfitted with sword and shield, probably the main character you will use for hacking and slashing your way through bad guys.

Zoya: She has uber dexterity armed with a bow and grapple hook.

The level design is still that beautiful eye candy we're used to seeing in the previous games, but now with a more immersive and fantastic depth which is made ever more impressive when you start moving around into the now 3D environment.. see for yourself.

So far so good, I've been hitting this game hard as I learned to with the first 2, collect as many collectables as possible along the way to upgrade the characters abilities reach the end and then start all over again and search each level taking the graphics and atmosphere.

This game I have no doubt is going to be amazing when it is finally released, as it stands at the moment it is still fantastic I have discovered one or two glitches but nothing major, and for some unknown reason the first chapter appears to be frame locked to 30fps whether or not this is by design it is not noticeable whilst playing.

Nice write up dude. I must admit I am pretty partial to a TRINE game. I completed the first one but became stuck on the second one and really didn't try hard enough to get through it. I must go back and complete it !

Also wanted to add. This is one of the best games ever made for 3dvision. It really is something to behold. It literally looks like your monitor is a toy box and all of the things inside it look like little toys. Incredible stuff, very happy that my other rig has a 27" passive 3d monitor so I may just have to play this in 3d :D

I couldn't imagine this game using 3DVision it would blow my mind, it is much easier than the second game and has just got better with a recent update to the controls and movement, I'm aching for the full final release now I can't wait.

Also this time around frozen byte are going to include the level editor with the final product :) this news makes me happy.

Trine 3 is now officially upon us and released, if like me you love your old school platformers.. this is going to be a real treat to play finally :) we have been stuck with only 3 playable levels since the early beta phase, now it's here I know what I'm doing for the rest of the day.

OP Updated.

I played the hell out of the first 2, so I'll definitely be picking this up.
I got it early access for £7.49, it was only a 348MB download then, it's now £14.39 with 10% off and a whopping 4.2GB. I just waiting for Steam to update it then I'm AFK until food time

I've started playing the 3rd today, and I'm liking it thus far.

Such a sucker for a good platformer. ^_^

I love a good platformer I bought the revamped version of Oddworld when it came out in feb but I have never played Trine at all.

"The future of the series is in question". :(:(:(

I've since beaten the game, and I don't know what people are up in arms about - I paid a lot more for so-called "Triple A" games that gave me far less gameplay time.

I enjoyed it quite a bit, being the platformer fan I am. Just hope it's not the last Trine game yet. ^_^

I covered all that in the news yesterday, I agree with you though, I've also payed more for worse. Joel from Frozenbyte was chatting in the Steam forum last night. The dev team are taking all the community feedback very seriously, and will be returning to Trine after a break, I just hope they go back to the 2.5D format. 3D was a nice concept but it just felt wrong.

I didn't mind the 3D, at the start I though it was going to have problems with moving boxes around and other stuff, but after I got used to it, it was fine.
